Azure Faux Cables Hat Knitting Pattern

azure cable knit hat pattern

A short real life story. Recently my cousin got a task at school to knit a hat that they would be ready to wear))) She reached out to me and asked if I would be ready to help her. I agreed and we spent a great time together by going through tons of various hat designs on the web, discussing them and finding a bright-colored yarn to get a perfect match with her jacket. Honestly saying I was also surprised of the hat we made and decided that it’s worth sharing this pattern. So if you’re looking for knitting something bright, then azure cable knit hat might be a great choice or at least one of the options to consider (acid-tested with a teenager).

Knitting materials and tools:

<> Circular Knitting Needles 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4 mm (US 6);

<> Gazzal (baby wool) 40% Lana Merino, 20% Cashmere Pa, 40% acrylic. Teal blue color: 50 grams -100 m per skein – <1.5 balls;

<> Raccoon fur pom pom.

Azure cable knit hat size:

Adult 52-58 cm

Gauge: 19 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

k2tog – knit two together

yo – yarn over

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over

Knitting ribbing of the cable hat:

Cast on 102 stitches onto the smaller circular needles, place marker and join to work in the round. Start with ribbing row – *k1, p1*. Knit the ribbing row until piece measures 5.5 – 6 cm (in my case it was 13 rows).

Shaping the crown of cable knit hat:

Change circular needles to double pointed ones if needed.

Round 1: *k3, skpo, k9, p3, repeat from * to the end of round. Do not purl the last stitch.

Round 2: *k2tog (the last stitch from previous round and the first stitch of second round), k2, skpo, k8, p2, repeat from * to the end of round.

Round 3: *k3, skpo, k6, k2tog next knit and purl stitch (I did it not as usual k2tog but as skpo stitch), p1 repeat from * to the end of round.

Round 4: *k3, skpo, k5 k2tog next knit and purl stitch (I did it not as usual k2tog but as skpo stitch), repeat from * to the end of round.

This hat is beautiful! Thanks for sharing the pattern. Do you think it could be made into a messy bun hat?

yeah, why not 🙂

Just thought I would tell you….I have used almost every hat pattern I have for messy bun hats…you just work them down to the decrease and then guess…lol…that part is hit and miss.. I just decrease until I think the hole is small or large enough and then knit one round and cast off… So far it has always worked!

Hi there! Is there a size for toddler/child size? I really want to make this for my daughter and nieces! Thanks!

Hi! I dont have another size pattern but you can simply adjust it. Instead of 102 stitches cast on 85 and follow the pattern. But before check your gauge. Or you can also decrease the number of purl stitches between cables.

I just cannot work with circular needles. Can I make this with straight needles ?

Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 28th November 2017 at 10:10

hi, yes of course. You can use double pointed knitting needles.

i have a question about the gague. Did you use the smaller or larger needles to get 19 stitches = 4 inches?

Reply
Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 9th January 2018 at 21:35

Hi, I used larger needles to get such gauge.

Reply
Jamie Searles 10th January 2018 at 03:38

Thank you. My gague was smaller 19 stitches = 3.5”. Would you recommend I use larger needles or add stitches to the pattern and if I should add, how many would be appropriate for the pattern to work out properly? Thanks for your help!

Reply
Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 11th January 2018 at 02:31

I would try to knit with your gauge, it actually can suit your size at the end, or just take a bit larger needles. You can also go with 4 purl stitches between cables instead of 3. Let me know if you have more questions.

What would be the chart for a cable facing the opposite direction? I belive I’m asking for the opposite direction (equivalent) for the SKPO?

Reply
Knitting Guru 22nd November 2019 at 07:49

Hi, If I get you correctly opposite to SKPO is k2tog and vice versa.

Hi- I just finished this pattern, using the gazzal wool- It was a quick pattern and looks beautiful- I used US 6 circular needle for the whole thing because I did not have a size 4- my concern is the hat seems small- it measures 7 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches- what did I do wrong? Any feedback you could give me would be appreciated- I would like to make it bigger- can you tell me how? Thank you

Knitting Guru 5th November 2020 at 21:01

hi. Was it the same yarn 50 grams -100 meters? I can only assume that you are super tight knitter. My hat was perfect for my head circumference (54 cm) and it would fit even bigger sizes. I can only suggest you using a little bit heavier yarn ( 4 worsted) 170 meters -100 grams And take 4 and 4.5 mm (5 mm) knitting needles. Let me know if it worked

What length circulars can I use? Is 16 inches too small?

Reply

16 is perfect

I’m not sure what I am doing wrong but I can’t get the first row of the pattern to work out. I have knit and tinked this three times and end up with 8 stitches left over? Any suggestions.

Reply
Ann 23rd November 2022 at 11:40

Hi Donna. I do not know where is the problem but the number of stitches is divisible by 17. So place every 17 sts a stitch marker and try repeating *yo, k3, skpo, k9, p3. i also suggest you watching a video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeP0V1-vaoI

Hi, I’m interested in using a medium weight yarn (4). Is there a multiple to decrease the number of stitches? Thank You!

Reply
Ann 24th December 2022 at 13:47

Multiple of 17
