Knitting ribbing of the cable hat:

With a white yarn and 3.75 mm circular knitting needles cast on 80 stitches. Mark the first stitch and join for knitting in the round. Knit 7.5cm or 3 inches of k2, p2 rib.

Knitting folded brim of the cable hat:

In the next Round knit all knit stitches as purl stitches and all purl stitches as knit ones. Continue working in 2 to 2 ribbing pattern *p2, k2* until the piece measures 15 cm or 6 inches from CO.

Knitting body of the cable hat:

Round 1: Change knitting needles to a large size and pink yarn. In this round, we are going to increase. Add 40 more stitches. The total number of stitches in the body part must be divisible by 30. In my case the total number is 120 stitches.

Round 2-11: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 12: *k10, C10B, repeat from* to end of round.

Round 13-22: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 23: *C10F, k10, repeat from* to end of round.

Repeat Rounds 2-12 or Rounds 2-23 once more, depending on the weight of the yarn you are using. For my hat, I repeated only Rounds 2-12.

Shaping the crown of cable knit hat:

Round 1: *k2tog, k2, repeat from* to end of round – (90 stitches left).

Round 2: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 3: *k2tog, k1, repeat from* to end of round – (60 stitches left).

Round 4: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 5: *k2tog, repeat from* to end of round – (30 stitches left).

Round 6: knit in stockinette stitch.

Round 7: *k2tog repeat from* to end of round – (15 stitches left).

At some point, I just ran out of the pink yarn, so I finished shaping rounds using the same yarn of white color that I used for the cuff.

Cut yarn leaving 10 cm tail. Pull yarn through remaining 15 stitches. Pull tight and weave in the end.

On the top of the hat attach a fur pom pom. I think this is the one of the most adorable and warm hats that I have ever knitted.

Hi! Love the pattern! But I was wondering how you did your increases?

Reply
Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 7th January 2018 at 21:08

Hi Stephanie. If you are going to knit only with one color check my video how to make increases from the previous round https://www.instagram.com/p/BNl4-I2BmE6/?taken-by=amurushka_amur. If you are going to knit ribbing part in one color and body part in another just insert the left needle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the two stitches then you have to knit the stitch through the back loop

Good Day!
This is a really nice pattern, and I love the baby hat with ear flaps. Do you have a child size or toddler size in this pattern? I would love to knit this for my pre-school age grandchildren!
Thanks!

Hi Julie,
Unfortunately I dont have another sizes in this pattern. I would suggest you to take lighter yarn and follow the pattern without changing. Otherwise you can decrease the number of stitches for the body part following given suggestions. The total amount of stitches must be divisible by 30.

Hi! loving making this hat but having some trouble with the C10B, my stitches are so tight after k10 and getting part of the extra needle knitted that I can’t finish getting all the stitches knit from the extra needle. Any tips or advice? Thanks I really am enjoying this project 🙂

Hello Jackie, Please read my answer to another woman that has asked me the same question:

Thank you for your kind feedback and question. You are not the first person who is asking me to help with cable tension. I am planing to make a small video showing how you can easily cross cables. I believe your way of knitting is too tight that is why you can not knit the stitches off the cable needle.

I will try to explain:

In the Round 11 (or any other Round before cabling) you will add yarn over stitches in that stitches that are going to take a part in cabling. So in your case Round 11 will look like [k10, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2, yo, k2] repeat till the end of the Round.

Round 12: [k10, Slip 10 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in back of work (drop all yarn over off the needle), k10 from the left hand needle(drop all yarn over off the needle), k10 from the extra needle] repeat till the end of the round. So this way in one round you add yo and in the next one you get rid off of it loosening your knitting.

Please check photo instruction how to make yarn over from this pattern https://crazyhands.net/azure-cable-hat-knitting-pattern/

For the Cable 10 Front stitch (C10F) you will firstly knit part with yo stitches and only after k10.

I am not sure if you got the idea, but when you drop yo off the needle it reduces the tension in cables.

Let me know if it worked and hope to see soon your marshmallow hat 🙂

Am new to knitting. Am confused about the 2by2 ribbing stitch. In pattern you say knit the purls and purl the knits. Is there a video to explain how to do this. I am confused. Do I start each round with p2,k2?
Tks

Reply
Knitting Guru 18th December 2018 at 00:34

Hi Pat. Firstly you rib ķ2,p2 but after 5-6 cm you start each row from p2, k2. Your brim will be better to fold if you follow this pattern. If it is still strange for you simply rib ķ2,p2 till the end of ribbing part.

Hi… i follow you on instagram! Beginning knitter here, my question is if i use a magic loop i don’t really need to be concerned abt yo as compared to double pointed needles? I saw the questions up there and i’m wondering if this is an issue with the knitting in rounds? Thanks!

Reply
Knitting Guru 15th January 2019 at 23:35

Hi.do you also have problems with cables? If so, you will need to make yo as well even you use magic loop method. If no, just follow the main pattern

Hi

Can you tell the weight of the wool as I am in the UK and would need to use a different yarn ?

Reply
Knitting Guru 22nd January 2019 at 16:55

Hi. We dont use weight in my country but i would suggest it is bulky or medium. In my opinion it is better to buy the yarn where 130 meters per 100 grams

I am knitting the pink marshmallow hat and i have a question about the cable 10 back. am i understanding right that when it says to cable 10 back it means to hold all 10 stitches to the back, knit 10 and then knit 10 from cable needle? I asdk this because mo0st of the time when it says to cable a certain number of stitches, you have to split that number. like cable 10 back would mean put 5 stitches on cable needle knit 5 and then knit 5 from cable needle. I did your cable 10 exactly as it said to but I want to know if i am doing it right. hope this makes sense as i thought it seemed tight but i really love this hat. You do beautiful cable work by the way. I will be making more of your patterns!

Knitting Guru 27th October 2019 at 22:38

Hi Michelle. You are absolutely right with C10B. You put 10 sts in back on the extra needle , knit next 10 sts and then knit 10 sts from the extra needle. Thanks for your feedback and hope to see your hat soon 🙂

Stephanie Hoover 7th January 2020 at 16:27

I can’t find the yarn that you used for this hat. If I understand correctly, you use a bulky weight yarn, but very small needles. Bulky weight yarn typically uses 10 or 11 size needles, but you call for size 5 and 7 needles. Am I correct in how I am reading this?

Reply
Knitting Guru 9th January 2020 at 09:48

Hi, yes you are absolutely right. I am not a tight knitter so it was fine for me to use smaller needles size. Regarding the yarn I still have some colors in stock if you want just let me know.

ILOVE the pink mardhmellow cable hat , but like a few others that have written in, I am having a worse froblem with the cf cable, the ob stitxhes are SO tight that I CAN,T slide the newly knitted stitch along my needle, to make more room for new stitches, I have been knitting for over 40 yrs., and I knit english style,, this wide of a cable makes for very loose stitches and gaps on the next row.i saw something about a video that ttttttyou were planning to postwith instructiions to yarn over? is that out, and where can I find it? also I saW IN ONE OF YOUR replys to some one elses question, that said,, [with your kind of knitting, this will not work] I was wondering what method, and what you meant by that comment,, thank you so much for any assistance,,

Hi Mary, Thanks for your question. Have you read my answer to another knitters? Here is it:

I did not make video as yet but after your comment I promise to do it till the end of this month and upload it to my Youtube channel. Let me know if explanation worked for you.

please can you say how your gauge is measured – is it 15 st. = 4 in. in stocking stitch or over cable? I assume it’s not rib.
Thanks very much for the pattern. Looking forward to making it.

Knitting Guru 3rd September 2020 at 00:25

Hi, yes, the gauge is in stocking stitch. If you use bulky yarn you should get a perfect size. Let me know if you have other questions.

I have increased the cable body by 30 stitches (total 150 stitches). How should I finish shaping the crown to not be adding excess rows to the hat top?

Reply

AS I understood you are not using bulky yarn. If so, do not change anything and make the same decreases.

I love this hat and would like to make it for both my granddaughters, one 4 and the other 8. Can you suggest how to downsize the pattern to make it appropriate for my girls? Please help?

Reply
Knitting Guru 25th September 2021 at 15:17

Hi Maddi. Thank you for your feedback. For the 8 yo you do not need to change anything as at this age kids have the same head circumference as adults. you can only decrease the length of the hat if needed. For 4 yo you can try taking worsted weight yarn instead of bulky and do not change the pattern.
