Four Layers Diape Cake Tutorial
Woohoo, I’m finally back here! Master class of Rainbow cardigan is almost done and I’ll upload it sometime this week. Today’s post is something totally different from what I’ve done before. I’m going to share with you my experience of making one of the most unique cakes.
The reason I decided to do it is that exactly one month from now I’ll become an aunt and, as a nice sister, I want to make a present that will be original, cute, useful and will surprise my brother and his wife. That’s why I stopped my choice on the cake that is made out of the diapers:)))
Luckily, I’ve got to know the gender of the baby early in advance and chose the colors respectively. I’m not promoting here any brand of the diapers, so you just have to know the quantity that I used, which is 84 pcs.
Also one important detail that we are waiting heavy boy, so I was afraid to buy diapers for 3-6 kg baby and decided to buy diapers for 7-14 kg baby. My diaper cake has 4 layers and is quite tall, so in case you want to make a smaller version with 2 or 3 layers – feel free to use less diapers.
Making the first layer of a diaper cake
Before you start working – I’d highly recommend cleaning your hands properly, work on the clean surface and keep high level of hygiene to prevent any unpleasant surprises in the future.
Start the work by putting some pot in the middle of your working surface and cover it with diapers to make a circular shape. Then fix it with rubber band and remove the pot.
To fill the empty space left after removing the pot I took a diaper and started rolling it into another one until I reached the size corresponding with a spot in the middle and insert it in.
Third and fourth layers of a diaper cake
For the third and the fourth layer you don't have to use a pot. Just lay the diapers circularly and fix them with a rubber band.
To keep all the layers centered I was using a couple of thin carton tubes glued together with a glue gun.
If you want to make a smaller cake then you can use a bottle of champagne, baby shampoo bottle or bath foam to fill the space in the middle of a cake.
Decoration of a diaper cake
Now we are ready to decorate the cake. In my case I was using colorful corrugated paper. Since my diapers were green colored I decided to use green as a base color and well-fit with it yellow one. Cut the stripes of yellow paper 0.5 cm wider than the height of a layer.
Next cut the strips of green paper with a height 1.5-2.0 cm narrower than yellow ones. Try to use any circular shapes to make the waves on the paper.
Now you also need a base for cake to put it on. Use a tray or circularly shaped cardboard (decorate it nicely as well) that is bigger than the biggest layer of your cake.
When all previous steps are done it’s time to fill it with all the toys and accessories you have:))) My flatback rabbits and bears were glued to all the layers of the cake.
Cotton hat, nice socks, baby powder, cotton sticks for babies, wisp in the shape of frog, children’s set of fork and spoon, cute baby door stoppers (safety finger guard) – all of them were glued to the corrugated paper with a glue gun
When everything is done – gift wrap it and make a big bow on top!
Enjoy your time and talk to you soon in the next post!
