Teddy bear knit hat size:

Age: 1-2 years / 12-24 months

Head circumference: 47-50 cm

Gauge: 16-17 stitches = 4 inches (with two strands of yarn at once)

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

K – knit,

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch,

st(s) – stitch(es),

k2tog – knit two together,

ryo – reverse yarn over: bring the yarn to the front over the top of the right needle

To get started with baby hat we are going to use provisional cast on method. There are a couple of ways how to do it. Please use the one you know.

Suggested way: Using smooth piece of scrap yarn (preferably in a different color, so that you can identify it easily later), crochet min chain 36. Take 4 mm knitting needles and starting from the 3d chain pick up 32 stitches through the “bumps” on the back of the chain, that corresponds to the respective size of 12-24 months. Count your stitches when you are done.

The yarn called for is worsted weight but an option implies that sport or DK can be used doubled. Is that correct?

Hi Ann
I just tried to follow this pattern and was stuck on the first step. you’re saying to pick 32 stitches and work row 1. but row 1 needs 33 stitches by the looks of it, is this right? Slip + RYO + k28 + K2tog + purl = 33 stitches?
should I pick 33 stitches and then work with the pattern or still only pick 32 stitches and only k27 in the row one?
thanks!

Kat

Hi Katerina. You pick up 32 sts. After the first row you will have 33 sts as you are going to add 1 sts by doing ryo. Let me know if it is clear. I knot it can be a little bit confusing that is why I have done a video to follow
