Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, knit the last stitch
Knit 1×1 rib elastic cast-on method
Cast on an even number of stitches.
Row 1: sel s, [bring the needle underneath the cast-on edge (counterclockwise), slip the next stitch purlwise to the right-hand needle, then bring the needle back underneath the cast-on edge (clockwise) and return the slipped stitch to the left-hand needle, k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s
Row 2: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
After completing this row, continue with your desired pattern or work a simple ribbing of k1, p1.
Knit 2×2 rib elastic cast-on method
To ensure the stitch pattern works correctly, cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of 4.
Row 1: sel s, [p2, bring the needle underneath cast-on edge (counterclockwise), slip the next stitch purlwise to the right-hand needle, then bring the needle back underneath the cast-on edge (clockwise) and return the slipped stitch to the left-hand needle, k1, bring the needle underneath cast-on edge (counterclockwise), slip the next stitch purlwise to the right-hand needle, then bring the needle back underneath the cast-on edge (clockwise) and return the slipped stitch to the left-hand needle, k1] – repeat till the end, p2, sel s
