Crazy Hands

Crochet Butterfly Pattern for Beginners

crochet violet butterfly with white thorax, abdomen, antennae, and two decor beads on the wings

two small crochet butterflies on the hand. Each butterfly has antennae and decor bezel

One of the first thing I learned to crochet was a butterfly. I had to come up with some cute embellishment for my new curtains in the dorm and crochet butterflies worked just fine. Now whenever I am stuck with a decor piece for one of my projects, I always crochet butterflies. At one point I even wore butterfly earrings, but quite a bit of time has passed since then. This crochet butterfly is a fun project for beginners that could be easily done in 10 minutes. Add your handmade butterfly to a scarf, hat, or stick it to a refrigerator or a hair clip, and let it make your day brighter!

Crochet materials and tools:

<> Crochet hook 3.5 mm

<> Lanoso Bebe Masal (4) –100% acrylic, 170 meter per 100 grams skein or any other type of yarn. Violet and a little bit of white colors.

<> 2 beads

Size of crochet butterfly:

About 4.5-5 cm. The size depends on the yarn’s weight and size of the crochet hook.

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches:

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

htc – half triple crochet: yarn over twice, insert hook into the stitch (or in magic ring) and pull a loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through first 2 loops on the hook (now you have 3 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through all 3 loops.

dtc – double treble crochet: yarn over 3 times, insert hook into the stitch (or in magic ring) and pull a loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through first 2 loops on the hook (now you have 4 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through next 2 loops ( 3 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through next 2 loops ( 2 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull the yarn through next 2 loops.

Easy crochet butterfly pattern:

Make a magic ring.

First Small Wind: Ch 3, 3 htc, ch3, sl st to the magic ring

Second Small Wing: ch3, 3 htc, ch3, sl st  to the magic ring,

First Big Wind: ch 4, 4 dtc, ch 4, sl st to the magic ring,

Second Big Wing: ch 4, 4 dtc, ch 4, sl st to the magic ring,

Finish Winds: Make one more sl st to join big and small wings together. Cut the yarn and pull the tail to slightly tighten the magic ring. Weave in ends.

Butterfly’s antennae:

Ch 11. Cut the yarn. Wrap the chain around butterfly’s body and tie a knot to secure it. After tie a knot at each end of chain to create antennae.

Optionally: sew up bead to the butterfly’s wings.

The instructions are a little confusing for a straight up beginner but it is super cute.

Hey Rachael, thanks a lot for the feedback. What part of the instructions do you find confusing? Have you checked the video while crocheting your butterfly? If yes, was it at all helpful? Just want to understand how I can improve my future tutorials for the beginners 🙂

I was also a bit confused by reading the instructions but the video cleared it all and now I understand the written instructions also. Thank you for the pattern.
