Knitting materials and tools:
<> Double-pointed or circular knitting needles 4 mm (US 6 /UK 8). If you find yourself as a tight knitter switch for 4.5 mm (US 7 /UK 7) for the main part.
<> Knit Picks, Simply Wool – 100% Eco Wool Yarn. Color #: OC, 100 grams -193 yards per skein – in total less than 1 ball;
<> Weight Category – 5. Quantity – less than1 ball. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100 m (110 yards) per 100 grams skein.
Bulky yarn cable knit hat size:
Head circumference: 53-58 cm (21-22”).
Gauge: 15 -16 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Cable 1 Back Knit (C1BK) – Slip 1 stitch to the extra needle and hold in back of work, k1 from the left-hand needle, p1 from the extra needle.
Cable 1 Front Purl (C1FP) – Slip 1 stitch to the extra needle and hold in front of work, p1 from the left-hand needle, k1 from the extra needle.
K2tog – knit two together

Bulky yarn cable hat knitting pattern for men:
Knitting the ribbing of men’s cable hat
Using 4 mm knitting needles, cast on 80 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 8. Place stitch marker and join to knit in the round. Rib k2, p2 until piece measures 5-6 cm.
Knitting the body of men’s cable hat
Switch to 4.5 mm knitting needles if needed, otherwise go on knitting with 4 mm needles.
Round 1-6: [k1, p6, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 7: [C1FP, p4, C1BK]– repeat till the end of round.
Round 8: [p1, C1FP, p2, C1BK, p1]– repeat till the end of round.
Round 9: [p2, C1FP, C1BK, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 10-14: [p3, k2, p3] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rounds 1-14 until hat reaches 20 -21 cm.
In my case I repeated Rounds 1-14 once, and then knitted Rounds 1-6 until reaching the desired length. If you need to knit more rounds, go on repeating till Round 14.
Shaping the crown of men’s cable hat
Shaping the crown after the Round 14:
Round 1: [p2, k2tog, skpo, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [p2, k2, p2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [p1, k2tog, skpo, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [p1, k2, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 5: [k2tog, skpo] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 6: knit all stitches.
Round 7: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Shaping the crown after the Round 6:
Round 1: [skpo, p4, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [k1, p4, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [skpo, p2, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [k1, p2, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 5: [skpo, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 6: knit all stitches.
Round 7: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Break yarn and leave 10-15 cm tail. Thread end through remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends.
