Knitting materials and knitting tools:
- Double-pointed knitting needles 9 (US 13/UK 00).
- Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice.
- Weight Category – 6. Quantity – less than1 ball. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 60 m (65 yards) per 100 grams skein.
- Pom pom – black/white/purple color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – 15-16-17 cm.
Classic knit hat size:
Head circumference: 53-57 cm (21-22”).
Gauge: 9-10 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
K2tog – knit two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over
Classic knit hat pattern:
Using long tail method cast on 48 stitches or any other number divisible by 6. Place marker and join to knit in the round. Rib k1, p1 for 8 rows or until piece measures 5-6 cm.
Round 1: [slip st as if to knit, k2, pass slipped stitch over 2 previously knitted stitches, k3] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [k1, yo, k4] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [k3, slip st as if to knit, k2, pass slipped stitch over 2 previously knitted stitches] – repeat till the end of round. I knitted yo stitch through the front loop. But if you want even warmer hat, knit yo stitch through the back loop.
Round 4: [k4, yo, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rounds 1- 4 until hat measures 19 cm from the edge.
Shaping the crown of classic knit hat:
Round 1: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: knit all stitches around.
Round 3: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: knit all stitches around.
Round 5: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Break yarn and leave 10 cm tail. Thread end through remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends securely.
Add yarn, faux or real fur pom pom.
