Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
k4tog bf – at first knit next four stitches together through the back loop and then knit the same four stitches through the front loop, after that drop all stitches of the needle.
st(s) – stitch(es)
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Diagonal knot stitch knitting pattern:
Cast on a multiple of 4 sts, plus 2 extra stitches, plus 2 selvage stitches.
Row 1: sel, s, kni all stitches, sel s
Row 2: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 3: sel, s, *k2, insert the needle underneath the second bar between the last and next stitch and draw up a long loop, k2, insert the needle underneath the second bar between the last and next stitch and draw up a long loop, repeat from * till the end, k2, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, p2, * slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, p2, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, p2, repeat from * till the end, sel s.
Row 5: sel, s, *k2, k4tog bf, repeat from * till the end, k2, sel s.
sel s.
Row 6: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
