Knitting materials and tools:
Double-pointed or circular knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4). If you find yourself as a tight knitter switch for 4 mm (US 6 /UK 8) for the main part.
Red Heart, Super Saver – 100% acrylic. 198 grams -333 meters per skein.
Weight Category – 4. Quantity: 75 grams. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100 m (180-190 yards) per 100 grams skein.
Pom pom – black/white/purple color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – 15-16-17 cm.
Knit hat size:
Head circumference: 53-58 cm (21-22”).
Gauge:16-17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
K2tog – knit two together
P2tog – purl two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
Easy knit hat pattern for men:
Using 3.5 mm knitting needles, cast on 84 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 6. Place stitch marker and join to knit in the round. Rib k1, p1 until the piece measures 13-14 cm.
Optionally switch to 4 mm knitting needles.
Round 1: [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of the round.
Round 2: knit all stitches around.
Round 3: [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of the round.
Round 4: knit all stitches around.
Round 5: knit all stitches around.
Round 6: knit all stitches around.
Round 7: p3, [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of the round, p1.
Round 8: knit all stitches around.
Round 9: p3, [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of the round, p1.
Round 10: knit all stitches around.
Round 11: knit all stitches around.
Round 12: knit all stitches around.
Repeat Rounds 1-11. At this point, my hat measures 16 cm (fold the brim before you measure it). Go on repeating the pattern if you have not reached the desired length.
Shaping the crown of a men’s hat:
Round 1: k3, k2tog, [k4, k2tog] – repeat till the end of the round, k1.
Round 2: [k2, p3] – repeat till the end of the round.
Round 3: knit all stitches around.
Round 4: [k2, p3] – repeat till the end of the round.
Round 5: knit all stitches around.
Round 6: knit all stitches around.
Round 7: [k2tog, k3] – repeat till the end of the round.
Round 8: p1, [k2, p2] – repeat till the end of the round, k2, p1.
Round 9: knit all stitches around.
Round 10: p1, [k2, p2] – repeat till the end of the round, k2, p1.
Round 11: p1, [k2tog, p2tog] – repeat till the end of the round. At the end of this round decrease the last and first stitch of the next round by purling them together.
Rounds 12-15: [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 16: [skpo] – repeat till the end of the round.
Break yarn and leave 10-15 cm tail. Thread the end through the remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends.
Optionally attach yarn, faux or real fur pom.
