Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or straight knitting needles 3.5 mm (US4).
Knit it, Super Soft Yarn –100% acrylic. 120 grams -324 m per skein.
Weight Category – 3. Quantity – 35 grams.
Yarn needle.
Brioche stitch baby knit hat size:
Head circumference: Baby: 38-40 cm (15-16”)
Baby age: 3-6 months
Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
k1b – knit one below
p – purl
p2tog – purl two together
WS – wrong side
RS – right side
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
skpo - Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch, and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Brioche stitch baby hat knitting pattern:
Using the long tail method, cast on 68 sts or any other even number.
Rows 1-7: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. This part measures 2 cm.
Row 8: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 9: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 10: sel s, repeat [k1, p1] across, sel s.
Row 11: sel s, repeat [k1b, p1] across, sel s.
Rows 12-16: Repeat Row 11.
Repeat Rows 8-16 three more times.
Row 44: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 45: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 46: sel s, repeat [k1, p1] across, sel s.
Row 47: sel s, repeat [k1, p1] across, sel s.
Shaping the crown:
Row 1: sel s, repeat [skpo, p2tog] across, skpo, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, repeat [p1, k1] across, p1, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, repeat [skpo, p2tog] across, sel s. Purl the last stitch together with selvage stitch.
Finishing the hat: Cut the yarn, leaving a 40–45 cm (16–18 inch) tail. Thread the tail into a yarn needle and pull it through the remaining stitches to close the top of the hat. Turn the hat right side out and begin seaming: Insert the needle into the first selvedge stitch and pull it out from the second one on the same side, then repeat the same on the other side. Continue seaming the hat to the end. The seam is soft, which is very important for babies. Feel free to use other ways of seaming. Check the video tutorial for a step-by-step demonstration.
