Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

yo – yarn over

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

k3tog – knit three together: Slip the first two stitches knitwise, then knit third stitch, and finally, pass two slipped stitches over the knitted stitch.

Fisherman’s rib stitch knitting pattern:

Cast on any odd number of stitches.

Row 1: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, repeat [k1, yo, slip next stitch pwise] across, k1, sel s.

Row 3: sel s, repeat [YO, slip next stitch pwise, knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together] across, yo, slip next stitch pwise, sel s.

Row 4: sel s, repeat [knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together, YO, slip next stitch pwise ]  across, knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together, sel s.

Row 5: Repeat Row 3.

Row 6: Repeat Row 4.

Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

Row 8: Repeat Row 4.

Row 9: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Row 10: sel s, repeat [YO, slip next stitch pwise, k1] across, YO, slip next stitch pwise, sel s.

Row 11: sel s, repeat [knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together, YO, slip next stitch pwise] across, knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together, sel s.

Row 12: sel s, repeat [YO, slip next stitch pwise, knit the slipped stitch from the previous row and the YO together,] across, YO, slip next stitch pwise, sel s.

Row 13: Repeat Row 11.

Row 14: Repeat Row 12.

Row 15: Repeat Row 11.
