Jogging in a foggy chilly morning might be a real challenge, but with this set you can forget about keeping your ears warm, neck protected and fully enjoy your sport activities. But doing sport is obviously not the only use case for cable knit cowl and cable knit ear warmer, I’m sure that you will also enjoy wearing it on a regular walk. This cable knit set has a refreshing color and will definitely make your mood more positive. I hope you will like my wicker set and enjoy knitting it. Let’s get started!
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
selvage stitch – Always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Cable 3 Back (C3B): Slip 3 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in back of work, 3k from the left hand needle, 3k from the extra needle.
Cable 3 Front (C3F): Slip 3 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, 3k from the left hand needle, 3k from the extra needle.
Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> For the cowl: 16 inch circular needles number 8 US (5 mm);
<> For the headband: needles number 6 US (4 mm);
<> Bonito Lanoso 49% wool, 51% acrylic. Orange color: 100 grams -300 m per skein (Used in total 1.5 skeins).
Cable knit cowl pattern
Cable cowl size:
Length: 56 cm
Gauge: 14 stitches = 4 inches
Knitting body of the cable cowl:
I didn’t have a bulky yarn this time, so I was knitting a cable cowl with 2 strands of the yarn at the same time. You can use 2 balls simultaneously or just use 1 ball with yarns that come from the outside and from the center.
Cast on 48 stitches for the cowl.
Row 1: selvage st (slip the first stitch), 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 38k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st (purl).
Row 2: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 36p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 3: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, [C3F] – 6 times 1k,1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 4: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 36p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 5: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 38k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 6: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 36p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 7: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 3k, [C3B] – 5 times, 3k, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 8: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 36p, 1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Keep repeating Rows 1-8 until you reach desired length of the cowl.
Cut the yarn leaving 35-40 cm tail.
As in my previous pattern of sandy winter cable cowl I was using method of horizontal invisible seam to finish it. I believe it’s the best way to join two edges.
Cable knit ear warmer pattern
Using the same cable pattern start knitting the ear warmer.
Cast on 26 stitches for the headband. If you need to make the knitted headband narrower or on the contrary wider, just remove or add extra stitches keeping in mind that main cable scheme must be divided by 6.
Row 1: selvage st (slip the first stitch), 1k, 1p, 20k, 1p, 1k, selvage st (purl).
Row 2: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 18p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 3: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, [C3F] – 3 times 1k,1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 4: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 18p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 5: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 20k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 6: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 18p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 7: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 3k, [C3B] – 2 times, 3k, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Row 8: selvage st, 1k, 1p, 1k, 18p, 1k, 1p, 1k, selvage st.
Repeat Rows 1-8 as much as you need.
Finish knit headband using same knitting technique of horizontal invisible seam.

I love the wicker set – cowl and headband. I started with the headband – did the first 8 rows and my project looks nothing like the picture. It seems to me the pattern is different for headband and cowl. The row after the cable row – in cowl, purl the middle stitches – in headband – knit those stitches. I am an experienced knitter – but need to follow a pattern. Are you sure yours is correct. I feel as if I can’t be that far off – but I do seem to be! Help!

I have a question about the headband I printed the pattern of and rows 4 &6 begin selvage stitch, selvage stitch I don’t know what to do about the second selvage stitch as with the first one you slip it purlwise do you do the same with the second one or do you purl it. I have relooked at the pattern online again and it now only has selvage stitch, selvage stitch written like that on row 5 can you please tell me what i’m supposed to do as I’m confused. Also I’m doing it in chunky wool and have decided to do it on size 10 needles they are thick ones. What ply wool did you use. Thanks Adele
Hello Adele. Row 5 was simple misprint. Please start all rows with selvage stitch ( slip it purlwise ) and finish each row with selvage stitch (purl). I was doing in bulky wool. You can use any type of wool just control the width of headband. Hope it helps!

Hello! I found this pattern on line and thought I’d knit for a friend. I’m knitting Christmas presents in lockdown! I’m in the uk so many terms are different. Op you’ve knitted on quite thin needles am I right so are you using DK wool or 4ply rather than Aran (worsted) thanks for your reply I can then Order the yarn 😀

Hi ! Your patterns look great ! But I was wondering how to make the cowl pictured above, without the bands on each side. It seems to me the pictured cowl isn’t representative of the pattern because there isn’t an edge to it. Thanks for you help !
Hi Jayce. If you dont want to knit bands on each side and would like to leave only cabling part then remove from each row and each side part -1k, 1p, 1k, 1p, 1k. Dont forget to leave salvage stitches.
Hi ! I’m knitting the cowl with a bulky yarn and it is almost impossible to do the cables as the stitches are so tight ! Using size 8 straight needles. Did first 8 rows. Not sure I should go on or rip and start over with bigger needles. Suggestion?

Hi, I am making the headband only. I plan on using a worsted yarn. Would I just use a single strand or double as you mentioned in the cowl pattern?
I think 1 strand will be enough if you are satisfied with the headband’s width

Wonderful Pattern! It’s easy to follow for a beginner like me, however, I have a question… When you finish every row, do you turn your work or continue on the round? And if you continue on the row, where do you start the following row? Thanks so much!

I almost finish mine! It’s a gorgeous pattern. Now as I said before, I’m a beginner, so before I do the seam, do I have to cast off or not? Thanks for your replies

I have started the head band 5 times. Row 7 doesn’t come out right. Is the c3f done only 2 times? Don’t know where my error is. Thank you.

Hi Ellen. Where is your problem? Yes, knit C3F only twice. If you cound the total amount of stitches is 24 (+2 sl sts), so the amount is correct. How many stitches you are left?
Hi further to my recent question I see its 5 ply wool. Can I substitute double knitting weight?
Hi Val, as you have seen I use 2 strands of yarn together, so Aran (worsted) or Bulky (5) is required for this pattern. DK is also possible if you use 2 strands of yarn together otherwise the width of a headband or a cowl will be less. Let me know if it clear. Stay healthy and happy knitting

Hi Sandra. I don’t remember the width but it was about 9-10 cm. The length should be shorter a few centimeters than desired head circumference.

If anyone wants a slightly thinner version of the ear warmers, I did mine with 20 stitches (on size 8 needles). In case the changes are helpful:
-for the non-cabling rows, middle stitches of right side will be 14 instead of 20, wrong side will be 12 instead of 18.
-Row 3: [C3F] – 2 times (instead of 3)
-Row 7: … 3k, [C3B] 1 time, 3k…

Is there a way to print the pattern like I would a recipe. I went to print the page for the pattern and it said it was 27 pages with all the ads. Can you add a print “recipe” link, or in this case print “instructions” link. So I can get a succinct version of the pattern without having to print 27 pages?

This pattern does not work as illustrated. It only creates waves, not wicker pattern
