Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> 5 Double Pointed Knitting Needles 4 mm (US 6 / UK8) – for the ribbing part, 4.5 mm (UK7 / US 7) for the main part if you think you are a tight knitter. You can use 16” Circular Knitting Needles and magic loop technique to knit in the round;
<> Knit Picks, Simply Wool (Bulky) – 100% Eco Wool. Color #: OC, 100 grams -193 yards per skein – in total less than 1 ball;
Knit hat size:
Adult: 54-59 cm
Gauge: 15-16 sts – 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two together
p2tog – purl two together
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
pm – place marker
Pattern of the knit beanie with brim
Body of knit beanie:
Using smaller size needles, cast on 80 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 16. Join to knit in the round. Place marker and be careful not to twist stiches. Rib k2, p2 until hat reaches 16 cm if you want a folded brim, or 5-6 cm if you want a hat without brim. I am heading the hat with folded brim.
Change needles to 4.5 mm if needed
Round 1: [k10, p2, k2, p2] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 2: [k2, p6, k2, p2, k2, p2] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 3: repeat Round 1.
Round 4: repeat Round 2.
Round 5: repeat Round 1.
Round 6: repeat Round 2.
Round 7: repeat Round 1.
Round 8: repeat Round 2.
Round 9: [k2, p2, k2, p2, k8] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 10: [k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p6] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 11: repeat Round 9.
Round 12: repeat Round 10.
Round 13: repeat Round 9.
Round 14: repeat Round 10.
Round 15: repeat Round 9.
Round 16: repeat Round 10.
Repeat rounds 1-16 until hat reaches 17-20 cm.
For this hat after the first 16 rounds I repeated the pattern only from 1st to 12th round.
Shaping the crown of knit hat:
Round 1: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 2: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p4] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 3: [ k2, p2tog, k2, p2tog, k6] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 4: [ k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, p4] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 5: [k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, k2tog, k2] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 6: [ k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, p2tog, p1] – repeat till the ends of round.
Round 7: [ k1 , skpo, k2, k2tog, skpo, k2tog] – repeat till the ends of round. At the ends when you left 1 sts, remove the stitch marker and make k2tog, using one stitch from the next round. Place marker back.
Round 8: [k2tog] – repeat till the ends of round.
Cut the yarn, thread tail onto tapestry needle. Pull taught to close top of hat. On wrong side weave in ends. Block as desired.

Hi there, I am making your hat for a Xmas gift. Please note that you do not indicate when to switch to the larger needles in the written part of the pattern. You do state it in the materials section. Also, can you verify your gauge – you show the number of stitches but not the number of rows. Thank you for the warning about twisting the stitches, I did that mistake. Hi Jane. Thank you and good note. I added this information. When I usually knit hats I do not measure the number of rows, I just know the length that i have to knit before shaping the crown. For this hat: 25 rows – 10 cm. Let me know if you have other questions. Wish you Merry Christmas and Happy coming New Year!

Thank you so much for this pattern have just knitted it in 10 ply for my Father it looks lovely on him, a good hat for a man not too feminine but with enough texture going on to make it interesting. Cheers
