This is my first fully covered mittens pattern with small video tutorials for most of the hard and dubious parts. I have decided to call them Christmas Mittens as their color reminds me about an upcoming holiday spirit. Missing a touch of white? No problem, just add white decor item on the dorsum. My goal was to make a super easy pattern that is doable even for those ones who has never knitted mittens before.

Knitting the cuff:
Cast on 32 stitches for the mitten plus 1 more stitch to join in the round (In total 33 stitches). Rib k1, p1 for 7 cm or about 17 rounds.
For the garter stitch in the round always alternate knit round and purl round.
Round 1: Purl all stitch around
Round 2: Knit all stitches around
Repeat Rounds 1-2 eight more times , after that repeat again Round 1
Knitting gusset section:
Make the gusset section for the right hand on the 1st needle and for the left hand on the 4th needle. Otherwise, pay attention that the “jog” or seam was always on the sides of the palm.
Right Thumbhole:
For the right thumbhole leave first 6 stitches. Take waste yarn and k6, slip all 6 knit stitches back to the left needle, pick up working yarn and knit all 32 stitches around. Here is one more small video tutorial of how to knit gusset section.
Left Thumbhole:
Knit 26 stitches, drop working yarn and join the waste yarn, k6, slip last 6 stitches back to the left needle, pick up working yarn and k6.
Shaping mittens:
Continue knitting garter stitch pattern in round for about 9 cm or until the mitten reaches the tip of your little finger. Make sure knit round was the last one. After that start decreasing rounds.

Round 5: [p1, p2togL, p6, p2togR, p1] – repeat twice

Round 10: knit in stockinette stitch
Round 11: [p1, p2togL, p2togR, p1] – repeat twice
Cut the yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail, thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the mitten’s top.
Knitting the thumb:
Carefully remove the scrap yarn and pick up 5 stitches up and 6 stitches down. Pick up 2 stitches from the right side and 1 stitch from the left side for the right mitten or 2 stitches from the left side and 1 stitch from the right side for the left mitten. Pick up in total 3(4) stitches around the gap. If you see holes, try to twist some stitches or pick up couple of more but then don’t forget to get rid of them otherwise the thumb body will look too loose. To get rid of extra stitches k2tog in 2nd or 3d round.
Attach yarn and knit about 10 rounds or until it reaches the tip of your thumb.
Shaping thumb:
Round 1: k2, k2tog, k3, k2tog k3, k2tog.
Round 2: k1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog.
Round 3: k2tog, k1 k2tog, k1, k2tog.
Cut the yarn and thread it through remaining stitches to finish the thumb. Pull the tail tight.
Weave into the wrong side of mitten.
Repeat for the other mitten.
