Barbie-style hat knitting pattern:
Knitting hat’s brim:
Using 4.5 mm knitting needles, cast on 96 stitches or any other number multiple of 4. Join to knit in rounds. Check the video tutorial if you want to learn about the invisible joining method for a folded brim; otherwise, feel free to use any other method you are familiar with. Place stitch marker.
Round 1: [k1, p1]- repeat around.
Round 2: [k1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat around.
Repeat Rounds 1-2 until the brim measures 9 cm (3.5 in)
To make it easier, let’s start counting rounds from the beginning.
Knitting hat’s body:
Rounds 1-4: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around.
Round 5: [k1, p1]- repeat around.
Round 6: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around.
Continue repeating Rounds 5-6 until the hat reaches a length of 27 cm from the edge.
Shaping hat’s crown:
Apply these calculations if you have a different number of stitches.
96 sts/2 = 48 knit sts. To simplify calculations, we will only count knit stitches, skipping the purl ones.
48 – 8 (crown shaping lines) =40 knit stitches
40/4 parts = 10 knit stitches between stitch markers
Place stitch markers as follows:
5 knit sts, pm, 2 knit stitches pm (place stitch marker in the purl stitch between these two knit stitches and repeat for other crown shaping lines), 10 knit sts, pm, 2 knit stitches pm, 10 knit sts, pm, 2 knit stitches pm, 10 knit sts, pm, 2 knit stitches pm, 5 knit sts. Check the video tutorial if you need additional visual guidance.
Round 1: [k1, p1] – repeat 4 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, *[k1, p1] – repeat 9 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, repeat from * 3 times, [k1, p1] – repeat 5 times.
Round 2: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around. When we see 2 knitted stitches staying together, before the crown shaping line, we always knit the first one and slip the next one holding working yarn in back, while after crown shaping line we always slip first one holding working yarn in back and knit second one. This rule works for all even rows when you see two knit stitches staying together. Avoid slipping two consecutive knit stitches, as doing so may lead to the formation of holes along the shaping lines in the next round during decreases.
Round 3: [k1, p1] – repeat 4 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, *[k1, p1] – repeat 8 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, repeat from * 3 times, p1, [k1, p1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 4: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around.
Round 5: [k1, p1] – repeat 3 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, *[k1, p1] – repeat 7 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, repeat from * 3 times, [k1, p1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 6: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 3 times, k1, slip, p1, slip, k1, p1, *[ slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 6 times, k1, slip, p1, slip, k1, p1 – repeat from * 3 times, [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 3 times.
Round 7: [k1, p1] – repeat 3 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, *[k1, p1] – repeat 6 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, repeat from * 3 times, [k1, p1] – repeat 3 times.
Round 8: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around.
Round 9: [k1, p1] – repeat 2 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, *[k1, p1] – repeat 5 times, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, repeat from * 3 times, [k1, p1] – repeat 3 times.
Round 10: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 2 times, k1, slip, p1, slip, k1, p1, *[ slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 4 times, k1, slip, p1, slip, k1, p1 – repeat from * 3 times, [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat 2 times.
Round 11: [k1, p1] – repeat 2 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, *[k1, p1] – repeat 4 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, repeat from * 3 times, [k1, p1] – repeat 2 times.

Round 14: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around. Do not forget about 2 consecutive knit stitches.
Round 15: k1, p1, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, *[k1, p1] – repeat 2 times, k2tog, p1, skpo, p1, repeat from * 3 times, k1, p1.
Round 16: [slip knit stitch holding working yarn in back, p1] – repeat around.
Round 17: k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, *k1, p1, k1, k2tog, p1, skpo, repeat from * 3 times, k1, p1.
Round 18: [k1, slip, p1, slip, k1, p1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 19: [k2tog, p1, skpo, p1] repeat 4 times. (16 sts)
Cut the yarn, pull the tail through the last of the 16 stitches, weave it in, and trim the excess to finish the hat’s crown.

I have so much yarn that I have accumulated over the last 30 years. Who can I give it to?
Where do you live Rose? I know people donate them to those one who knit hats for hospitals.
