Knit body of the sock:

Using white yarn, cast on 16 stitches, leaving a 40-50 cm tail. This tail will be used to crochet a hanger at the end, if you plan to hang the sock on your Christmas tree. Join to knit in rounds.

Round 1: purl all stitches

Round 2: knit all stitches

Round 3: purl all stitches

Round 4: knit all stitches

Round 5: purl all stitches

Change to the red color.

Rounds 6-18: knit all stitches around. I changed the color on round 6 and just knit it with the new yarn. Then on row 7, I slipped the first stitch and knit the rest — this really helped to get rid of that jog you usually see when switching colors.

If you plan to switch colors for the heel, this is the moment to do it. If not, just keep going with the red yarn.

Knit heel flap:

Row 1: k7, p1. Turn.

Row 2: sel s, p6, sel s. Turn.

Row 3: sel s, k6, sel s. Turn.

Row 4: sel s, p6, sel s. Turn.

Row 5: sel s, k4, skpo. Turn.

Row 6: slip p, p2, p2tog. Turn.

Row 7: sel s, k2, skpo. Turn.

Row 8: slip p, p2, p2tog. Turn.

If you changed the color for the heel, now is the time to switch back to the main color.

Now it is time to pick up stitches from the gusset and knit in rounds again.

Round 1: k4, pick up and knit 3 stitches along one side of the heel flap, k8, then pick up and knit 3 stitches along the other side. (18)

Round 2: knit all stitches around.

Round 3: k6, skpo, k6, k2tog, k2.

Rounds 4-10: knit all stitches around.

If you plan to use a different color for the toe section, join the new yarn at the start of Round 9.

Shaping the toe:

Round 11: [skpo] – around. (8)

Round 12: knit all stitches around.

Trim the yarn, leaving about 10 cm. With a tapestry needle, pull the tail through the last stitches to close the toe. Don’t forget to weave in all the ends.

Return to the starting yarn tail. With a crochet hook, chain the desired number of stitches and join back to the base to form a hanging loop.
