With February bringing cold arctic vortex across North America, it’s time to learn Vortex stitch and knit a warm scarf, vortex knit hat or, at the very least, an ear warmer. Vortex is an easy to grasp stitch for beginners as it’s just a combination of knits and purls. Knitting materials and tools:
<> DPN 9 mm (US 13/UK 00)
<> Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic.
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
st(s) – stitch(es)
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Knit vortex stitch instructions:
Cast on a multiple of 2 sts plus 2 selvage stitches. In my example 20 stitches.
Row1 (RS): sel s, *k1, p1– repeat from *, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, *k1, p1– repeat from *, sel s.
Row 3 (RS): sel s, *knit all stitches *, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, *knit all stitches *, sel s.v
Repeat Rows 1-4 to form a pattern.
