With February bringing cold arctic vortex across North America, it’s time to learn Vortex stitch and knit a warm scarf, vortex knit hat or, at the very least, an ear warmer. Vortex is an easy to grasp stitch for beginners as it’s just a combination of knits and purls. If you find anything tricky, simply refer to the video tutorial below or leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Knitting materials and tools:

<> DPN 9 mm (US 13/UK 00)

<> Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic.

Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

st(s) – stitch(es)

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

vortex knit stitch - only knit and purl stitches

Knit vortex stitch instructions:

Cast on a multiple of 2 sts plus 2 selvage stitches. In my example 20 stitches.

Row1 (RS): sel s, *k1, p1– repeat from *, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, *k1, p1– repeat from *, sel s.

Row 3 (RS): sel s, *knit all stitches *, sel s.

Row 4: sel s, *knit all stitches *, sel s.v

Repeat Rows 1-4 to form a pattern.
