Knitting materials and tools:
<> 16” Circular Knitting Needles 5 mm (US8/UK6)
<> Romantic Country (Bulky) – 30% Acrylic, 70% Wool.
<> 5 stitch markers.
Knit dickey size:
Head Circumference: 56-57 cm. If you are knitting a dickey for a male person, use 6 mm knitting needles and follow the same pattern.
Gauge: 14 stitches = 4 inches
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
k2tog – knit two together.
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
BO – bind off
M1L – make one left increase: make 1 left: pick up bar bringing left hand needle from the front to the back, then knit the bar through the back loop.
M1R – make one right increase: pick up bar bringing left hand needle from the back to the front, then knit the bar through the front loop

Dickey knitting pattern
Cast on 70 stitches plus 1 extra stitch if you are going to use the invisible joining method. Place marker and join in round. Rib k1, p1 until the neck part reaches 16-20 cm.
If you are planning to knit a different size of this dickey below you can find a few simple math formulas on how to redistribute stitches between shoulders, front, and back parts.
70sts/3 =23.3 sts
23 sts – the front part
23 sts – the back part
70-23-23=24 sts
12 sts – one shoulder
12 sts – another shoulder
Round 1: k12, pm, k23, pm, k12, pm, k23.
Round 2: k2, p10, pm, k2, p21, pm, k2, p10, pm, k2, p21.
Round 3: k2, M1L, k10, M1R, pm, k2, M1L, k21, M1R, pm, k2, M1L, k10, M1R, pm, k2, M1L, k21, M1R.
Round 4: [k2, p12, pm, k2, p23, pm] – repeat twice.
Round 5: [k2, M1L, k12, M1R, pm, k2, M1L, k23, M1R, pm] – repeat twice.
Round 6: [k2, p14, pm, k2, p25, pm] – repeat twice.
Go on knitting in the same way alternating rounds with and without increases until the raglan line reaches 11-12 cm.
Now I have 45 sts on the right side, 45 sts on the back part, 34 sts on the right shoulder, and 34 sts on the left shoulder. Your numbers can be different from mine.
In the next round, we are going to bind off shoulders’ stitches, binding off also one stitch from one raglan line and 1 stitch from another raglan line. K1, BO raglan st, shoulder sts and one more raglan stitch, knit all stitches of the front part and knit one raglan st, and repeat again binding of shoulder sts and knitting back part.
Continue working flat.

Row 2 (RS): sel s, k1, k2tog, k37, k2tog, k1, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, knit all sts, sel s.

Row 5: sel s, knit all sts, sel s.
Row 6 (RS): sel s, k1, k2tog, k33, k2tog, k1, sel s.
Row 7: sel s, knit all sts, sel s.
Row 8 (RS): sel s, k1, k2tog, k31, k2tog, k1, sel s.
Row 9: sel s, knit all sts, sel s.

Bind off 23 sts: slip the first sts, knit the next one. Then lift the first slipped sts over the second one and drop it off the needle. *Now you have one stitch on your needle. Knit the next stitch and lift the back stitch over the front stitch and drop it off the needle. Repeat from* till the last stitch. Purl the last stitch and lift the back stitch over this purl stitch and drop it off the needle. Cut the yarn.
Back part of the knit dickey:
Attach the yarn on the wrong side and repeat everything as for the front part.
On the wrong side weave in ends.

Where are the rest of the stitches kept if on the beginning of the decrease only knitting 45 stitches, are you slipping the rest of the stitches onto a stitch holder? I am struggling to understand the concept since part is knit in the round and the other part is knit flat – where is the final seaming done? on the shoulders or the back center seam? When you attach the yarn on the back side – where on the back side ? to follow thru the same patterning decrease as on the front part of the dickey.
Hi Terra. I do not slip stitches, instead I start knitting in rows only front part until I bind it off. After that, I attach yarn to the remaining stitches (wrong side) and go on knitting in rows but the back part. As soon as you see ROW, it means I started knitting in rows. Check video tutorial too. I would like to knit this with a fingering weight yarn. Do you have a pattern for that?
You can knit with 2 strands. Or use calculations I am giving in written tutorial.
