Oversized Knit Sweater Pattern with Bobbles

I’ve recently put my hands on knitting an oversized knit sweater for kids and was extremely happy with its outcome, so I decided to engage in a bigger project, and today present you an oversized knitting sweater pattern for adults. Adult sweater makes an awesomely-looking pair to the kid’s version and will definitely make some of your friends jealous for having a set of these knit sweaters. For knitting an adult version of the oversized sweater I used the same knitting technique, just scaled it to fit a grown-up person. Now is the time to make your hands dirty by making a set of handmade knit sweaters to fight back winter winds, and stay warm during the entire season.

Knitting materials and knitting tools:

<> Circular or straight needles in size US 10 (6 mm) 32”  for main part and circular needles in the same size 16” for neck;

<> Alpacana Lanoso Yarn: 35% wool, 40% acrylic, 25% alpaca. White color: 100 grams -130 m per skein – about 10 balls.

Finished measurements of oversized knit sweater for adults:

Length – 66 cm (26″) from the underarm.

Gauge: 14 stitches = 4 inches

24 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch

measurements schema of the oversized knit sweater

Note for knitters:

<> Each Row has a selvage stitches.

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

dec – decrease

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

bbl – bobble

k5tog – knit five together (use hook to help yourself)

inc – increase. Yarn over method:

increase yarn over method - step one
increase yarn over method - step two

How to knit a bobble stitch:

In the same stitch – knit 1, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 1 and then drop the stitch from your left needle.

Body of the oversized sweater – front part

Cast on 66 stitches.

Row 1: sel s, [k1, p1] – till the end of row, sel s.

Repeat Row 1 seven times or until piece measures 4.5-5 cm.

Continue working in garter stitch (knit all next rows) until the front piece measures 46 cm.

From the next row we start shaping a neckline. For the specified model the neckline is 20 cm wide and 7 cm deep. Current gauge of 28 stitches should be cast off over 19 rows. I start to cast off 4 stitches in the center. Then, in every second row 3 stitches, 2 stitches twice and 1 stitch 3 times.  Knit last 3 rows without decreasing. Check more clear pattern:

Row 1: sel s, k28, cast off next 8 stitches, k28, sel s, turn.

Row 2: sel s, k27, hold yarn in front, slip the last stitch, turn.

I am just curious in this pattern are the sleeves knit from the cuff up? Just curious because I would like to try this but want to add ribbing

Reply
Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 19th June 2018 at 23:47

Hi. Yes I start knitting sleeves from the cuff so you are free to add ribbing part.

Hello! What size is the adult sweater? I am kind of short and small, so could you help me resize it?

Reply
Crazy Hands Knitting Editor 31st August 2018 at 09:31

Hi Gergia.
The girl on the photo is about 165 cm tall. It is hard to resize until I dont know your body measurements. Try to knit body part and sleeves shorter than it is said in description. Let me know if you have more questions

Did you use 2 threads together in this pattern

Reply

Hi. No it is just 1 thread.

Reply
Penny Wedd 29th December 2019 at 21:17

It sure looks like you have 2 threads that you are knitting together in many pictures – why is that?

Reply
Knitting Guru 29th December 2019 at 22:48

Hi. Yes. I have taken some pictures from kid’s version of oversized knit sweater as I was using another yarn brand. Adult oversized knit sweater was done with Lanoso Alpacana yarn as mentioned in description.

Hello, could you help me to figure the neck into a cowl neck. I want to make for a friend & she will only wear that kind of neckline.

Reply
Knitting Guru 7th February 2020 at 17:59

Hi, I did not try it, but i dont think it will be hard. Where you pick up stitches around neck, do not rib but continue with garter stitch pattern in the round. It means you knit one round and then purl another round, and again knit one and purl another. Write me if you need more instructions.

Is this chunky type wool ? Could I use aran wool or would the measurements make it too small to fit an adult?

Reply
Knitting Guru 19th January 2021 at 19:38

HI Olivia. yes, it is bulky yarn. you can use worsted weight yarn. If you wear small or medium size it will fit you but not as oversized sweater.

Reply
Olivia Beaumont 20th January 2021 at 01:08

Thank u ,could I add stitches to it with the aran or worsted yarn or would it mess up the shaping . If I can add stitches how many do u think would work for the body and also for the bobble pattern of sleeves

Reply
Knitting Guru 20th January 2021 at 22:05

Yes, you can add stitches, but I dont know how many. Knit a small swatch and check your gauge, only after that we can recalculate the needed number of stitches

Reply
Stacey 2nd September 2022 at 06:53

Yes, that’s where I am asking this question. I am making a mommy and me version for a friend and then one for myself. My friend and I are very different sizes and want to make sure the two sweaters fit us appropriately since the pattern only currently comes in one size. You had said in a previous comment to someone else if you knew their measurements you can help them so I will gladly send you measurements once I know what you would need.

Thank you!

Reply
Ann 4th September 2022 at 18:17

Ok. Do it please. You can also take lighter yarn and do not change the pattern if you need a smaller size. Because I can tell you only initial number of stitches

Reply
Stacey 5th September 2022 at 08:33

If I know the number of stitches to start with I should be able to figure it out from there. What measurements would you need from me in order to be able to give me a number of stitches?

Reply
Ann 6th September 2022 at 13:12

It is oversized sweater, so the measurement you want it to be. At least to know the preferred width.
