Easy earflap baby hat knitting pattern.
This time I decided to dedicate some time to baby knitting topic and present you a cute earflap baby hat knitting pattern for newborns. I hope you will like it as much as me and ready to put it in your favourite knit hat patterns collection or at least bookmark it :))). I’m also sure that your kid, niece or nephew will be feeling warm and comfortable in it, and, of course, will be looking great. There are plenty of free knitting patterns for babies online, but not that many newborn knitting patterns, so if you are one of the happy mothers, aunts or grandmas, then this one is well-worth to consider. First of all, it’s not too difficult to knit if you know how to knit cables. Secondly, due to its small size it shouldn’t take much time to finish it, even one evening might be enough. Ok, less words – more actions, let’s do it!
Attention: please note that this hat was knitted specially for a photo session and cords are knitted for design purpose only. Therefore, don't tie them underneath or finish your item without cords!

Ribbing of the earflap baby hat knitting pattern:
With smaller needles cast on 76 stitches for the beanie. I would suggest to use a bulky yarn, but, unfortunately, I didn’t have it. That’s why I’ve decided to knit in 3 strands of yarn at once. Place the marker for beginning of the round if you are using circular needles.
Round 1: Rib in 2 by 2 *knit 2, purl 2* keep repeating this way 4-5 rounds until length of the ribbing reaches 1.5 cm from the edge.
Body of the earflap baby hat knitting pattern:
Round 1: 2p, 6k, 4p, 6k, 4p, 6k, 4p, 12k, 4p, 6k, 4p, 6k, 4p, 6k, 2p.
Repeat Round 1 – four more time.
Round 6: 2p, C3B, 4p, C3B, 4p, C3B, 4p, C3B, C3F, 4p, C3F, 4p, C3F, 4p, C3F, 2p.
Repeat Rounds 1-6 three (four) more times. Finish with Round 4.
What I decided to do is to make ears of bear. Simply, wind the yarn around the top corners as it’s been shown on the picture.
Next step is figuring out the place and the number of stitches for earflaps.
I’ve used my old method that is usually working. Divide the total number of stitches (76) into 5 parts. 2/5 – for front part, 1/5 for back part, 1/5 and 1/5 for each earflap.
According to my calculations, the number of stitches that I need to use for the earflap is 76/5 = ~ 15 stitches. I took 12 stitches as I wanted earflaps look smaller.
With a wrong side facing and double pointed knitting needle pick up 12 (15) stitches.
Row 1-2: selvage stitch, purl till the last st, selvage st.
Row 3: selvage st, p2tog, purl till the last 3 stitches, p2tog, selvage st.
Row 4: selvage stitch, purl till the last st, selvage st.
Repeat Rounds 3-4 until you have 3 stitches on the needle. Bind off.
Do not cut the yarn. Now we are going to crochet cords. Chain 20. Back with sc (or hdc). Weave in ends.
Repeat same steps for the second earflap.
Voila, baby hat is ready!
