Knitting materials and tools:

Circular needles 16 in/40cm 3 mm (UK 11) and 3.5 mm (US 4), double-pointed knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4).

Youth / Adult size: Pingouin, Fil d’Écosse n° 4 – 100 meters per 50 grams ball, 100% cotton. Quantity – 60 grams.

Baby/Toddler/Child: Schachenmayr Catania  – 125 meters per 50 grams ball, 100% Mercerized cotton.

Yarn needle, stitch markers.

Use a slightly heavier yarn and follow the stitch count for 48–51 cm (19–20″) to make a Youth or Adult size.

Gauge: 22-25 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette depends on the yarn you choose

Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

DYOP – Double yarn over, purl 1 

k2tog – knit together together

k3tog tbl – knit three together through the back loop

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch.

k3tog – knit three together: Slip two stitches to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the two slipped stitches, pass them over the knit stitch.

pm – place stitch marker

Yo – yarn over

RHN – right-hand needle

LHN – left-hand needle

Summer panama hat knitting pattern:

Ruffled Brim:

Using 3.5 mm knitting needles cast on 195/210/240 sts. Join to knit in the rounds. PM.

Rounds 1-3: knit all sts around.

Round 4: [k3, 12 DYOP] – repeat around. 

Round 5: [k3, (slip next 3 sts to RHN, dropping the double yarn overs from the previous round, return these 3 stitches back to LHN then k3tog tbl) – repeat 4 times] – repeat around.

You should now have  91/98/112 sts on your needles.

Round 6: knit all sts around.

In Round 7, we need to adjust the stitch count to obtain a number multiple of 10. 

Small size: decrease 1 st to get 90 sts.

Medium size: increase 2 sts to get 100 sts.

Large size: decrease 2 sts  to get 110 sts.

Make decreases and increases using your preferred method. For example to decrease: k2tog, to increase knit front and back. Work decreases and increases whenever you prefer.

Round 7: knit all stitches around, making increases or decreases according to your size.

Switch to 3 mm needles.

Rounds 8-17: [k1,p1] – around.

Return back to 3.5 mm needles.

Hat Body:

Round 1: [ p1, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpo, k2] – repeat around.

Round 2: [ p1, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, skpo, k1] – repeat around.

Round 3: [ p1, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, skpo] – repeat around.

Round 4: [p1, k9] – repeat around.

Repeat Rounds 1-4  a total of 8/9/10(11) times, or until the desired length is reached. 

For a Youth size worked with heavier yarn, repeat Rounds 1-4 a total of 5–7 times, or until the desired length is reached.

Crown Shaping:

Round 1: [ p1, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpo, k2] – repeat around.

Round 2: [ p1, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, skpo, k1] – repeat around.

Round 3: [ p1, k2tog, k5, skpo] – repeat around.

Round 4: [p1, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, skpo, k1] – repeat around.

Round 5: [p1, k2tog, k3, skpo] – repeat around.

Round 6: [p1, k5] – repeat around.

Round 7: [p1, k2tog, k1, skpo] – repeat around.

Round 8: [p1, k3] – repeat around.

Round 9: [p1, k3tog] – repeat around.

Round 10: [p1, k1] – repeat around.

Round 11: [k2tog] – repeat around.

Round 12: knit all stitches around.

Cut the yarn, leaving a 20-25 cm tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the crown. Weave in all ends.
