Flat Knit Colorworks Socks Pattern

 

Size of flat knit colorworks socks:

Size: US 6-7.5 (23.5- 24.5 cm). 

Gauge: 17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

k2tog – knit two together

p – purl

p2tog – purl two together

pm – place marker

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

Slip p  – slip purlwise

Slip k  – slip knitwise

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch.

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

Flat knit colorworks socks pattern:

Make two.

Sock Ribbing

Using green color, cast on 43 stitches. 

Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 (RS): sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s. 

Change the yarn color from green to yellow (or the color you use) and do not cut the yarn. In the next row, when changing colors, always knit the first stitch instead of slipping it. 

Sock Leg

Row 1: [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k2, sel s. 

Row 2: sel s k2, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, k2, sel s.

Change the yarn color from yellow to green. Do not cut the yarn. 

Row 3: k1, [slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, k3] – repeat till the end, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, sel s.

Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Change the yarn color from green to yellow. Do not cut the yarn. 

Row 5: k1, [slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, k3] – repeat till the end, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, sel s.

Row 6: [slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, k3] – repeat till the end, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, sel s.

Change the yarn color from yellow to green. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 7: [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k2, sel s.

Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Repeat Rows 1-8 two more times. Cut the yarn.

Instep Part:

Place stitch markers as follows: 14 sts, pm, 15 sts, pm, 14 sts.

Slip the first 14 stitches to the right-hand needle.

With yellow color:

Row 1: k1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, sel s.  Turn.

Row 2: sel s, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat 3 times, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from yellow to green. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 3: [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, k2, sel s. Turn.

Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from green to yellow. Do not cut the yarn. 

Row 5: [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, k2, sel s. Turn.

Row 6: sel s, k2, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat 2 times, k2, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from yellow to green. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 7: k1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, sel s.  Turn.

Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn.

Repeat Rows 1-8 until the central part reaches the base of the big toenail. I reached this length after knitting 46 rows (14 cm /5.5 in). In the last repeat, do not work Rows 7 and 8. Cut the green yarn and continue shaping the toe. 

Row 47: sel s, k2tog, k9, k2tog, sel s. (13)

Row 48: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.

Row 49: sel s, k2tog, k7, k2tog, sel s. (11)

Row 50: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.

Row 51: sel s, k2tog, k5, k2tog, sel s. (9)

Row 52: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. Cut the yarn.

Knitting the Sides of the Slipper:

Slip  the 14 sts back to the left-hand needle.

With yellow color:

Row 1: k14, pick up 26 sts along the one side of the instep. 

Your stitch count may vary. Flip your work to the wrong side and count the braids along the other side of the instep, where they are easier to see. Before picking up the instep stitches, add one extra stitch in the corner to help prevent a hole. I picked up 26 sts in total along one side, including the extra corner stitch. 

After that k9, and pick up 26 sts more along the other side of the instep, k13, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (89)

Rows 3: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (89)

Rows 4: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (89)

Change the yarn color from yellow to green.

Row 5-8: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (89)

If you have a wide foot, work 2 additional rows.

Knitting the Sole:

Place stitch markers as follows: 38 sts, pm, 13 sts, pm, 38 sts.

Row 1 (RS): sel s, k49, p2tog. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): slip k, k11, k2tog. Turn.

Row 3 (RS): slip p, k11, p2tog. Turn.

Row 4 (WS): slip k, k11, k2tog. Turn. 

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until 23 stitches (5-13-5) remain on the needles.

Knitting the Heel Part:

Row 1 (RS): slip p, k9, k2tog, p2tog. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): slip k, k8, k2tog, k2tog. Turn.

Row 3 (RS): slip p, k7, k2tog, p2tog. Turn.

Row 4 (WS): slip k, k6, k2tog, k2tog. Turn.

Row 5 (RS): slip p, k5, k2tog, p2tog. Turn.

Row 6 (WS): slip k, k4, k2tog, k2tog. Turn.

Row 7 (RS): slip p, k3, k2tog, p2tog. Turn.

Row 8 (WS): slip k, k2, k2tog, k2tog. Turn.

Row 9 (RS): slip p, k1, k2tog, p2tog. Turn.

Row 10 (WS): slip k, k2tog, k2tog. Turn.

Row 11 (RS): slip p, k2tog, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Pull the tail though the last loop to secure it. 

Using a yarn needle, seam the heel. Use the seaming method you prefer, or check the video tutorial for more detailed instructions.

Along the garter stitch section, I simply picked up the closest bumps to the selvedge stitch, alternating from one side to the other.

For the remaining sections: Insert the needle through the back loop of one selvedge stitch and bring it out through the next selvedge stitch. Repeat the same process on the other side. Weave in all ends.
