Knit Headband with Ties Pattern

Size of the knit headband with ties:

Gauge: 21-22 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette 

Width: 10,5 cm (4.3 in)

Length: 104 cm with ties (41 in)

The written pattern is available in 2 sizes, fitting head circumferences of 49–54 cm (19-21 in) and 55–60 cm (21-23 in). The number in parentheses is given for the larger size.

Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

k3tog – knit three together: Slip the next two stitches knitwise, k1, then pass two slipped stitches over the stitch you just knitted. 

st(s) – stitch(es)

pm – place stitch marker

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

Knitting the headband:

To get started with the headband we are going to use a provisional cast on method.

Using a smooth piece of scrap yarn (preferably in a different color, so that you can identify it easily later) and crochet hook, chain 50. Take 4 mm knitting needles and pick up 46 (50) stitches through the “bumps” on the back of the chain. Count your stitches when you are done.

Join to knit in the round. Pm.

Round 1: knit all stitches around. 

Repeat Round 1 until the piece measure 21-22 cm (23-24 cm)

Knitting the ties:

Round 1: [k10 (k11), k3tog, k10 (k11)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 2-3: k42 (k46).

Round 4: [k9 (k10), k3tog, k9 (k10)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 5-6: k38 (k42).

Round 7: [k8 (k9), k3tog, k8 (k9)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 8-9: k34 (k38).

Round 10: [k7 (k8), k3tog, k7 (k8)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 11-12: k30 (k34).

Round 13: [k6 (k7), k3tog, k6 (k7)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 14-15: k26 (k30).

Round 16: [k5 (k6), k3tog, k5 (k6)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 17-18: k22 (k26).

Round 19: [k4 (k5), k3tog, k4 (k5)] – repeat twice.

Rounds 20-21: k18 (k22).

Round 22: [k3 (k4), k3tog, k3 (k4)] – repeat twice.

If you are making the smaller size, stop here, all decreases have now been completed. If you are making the larger size, continue working the decrease rows as established. 

Rounds 23-24 (big size only): k18.

Round 25: [k3, k3tog, k3] – repeat twice. (14)

When 14 sts remain, switch to DPNs and knit the tie in the round (knit all stitches) until it measures 30-33 cm (12-13 in).

Cut the yarn, leaving a 20 cm (8 in) tail. Thread the tail onto a yarn needle and graft the two layers together using Kitchener Stitch for a seamless finish. Check the video tutorial if needed.

Now, unravel provisional cast on to get live stitches back onto the needle – 46 (50). Repeat the Ties section beginning with Round 1.

Weave in all ends. Wash the headband and lay it flat to dry. This will help the stockinette stitches relax and become beautifully smooth and even.
