Patchwork square blanket knitting pattern:
Cast on 19 sts or any other odd number.
For this tutorial, we will use alternating cable cast on: make a slip knot and insert the needle into it. Now you have the first stitch on your needle. Next, k1 and return the stitch from the RHN to the LHN. Now you have 2 sts. Insert the RHN between the 1st and 2nd stitches, draw up a loop, and place this loop onto the LHN. Now you have 3 sts. *Insert the RHN between the newly formed 1st and 2nd stitches, draw up a loop, and place it onto the LHN. Repeat the process from * until you have cast on the required number of stitches.

Square 2, Line 1:
If you are going to change the color, now is the time. Cut the yarn and pull the new color through the last stitch. Pick up 9 stitches along the left side of the 1st square, picking up stitches through the front loop only. Turn your work so that the WS is facing you, and using the same cast-on method as at the beginning, cast on 9 more stitches.
When you have the same number of stitches, repeat the square pattern starting from Row 1.
After the 2nd square is complete, change the color and repeat the process until you have either reached the desired width or the desired number of squares.
Square 1, Line 2:
To start the second row of the blanket, take a new color and, using the same cast-on method as at the beginning, cast on 9 stitches (half of the total stitches minus 1 stitch). Using the same needle, pick up 10 stitches along the top side of the very first square (through the front loop only). Turn and repeat and square pattern starting from Row 1.
Square 2, Line 2:
Cut the yarn and pull the new color through the last stitch. Pick up 9 stitches along the left side of the 1st square (line 2) and 9 stitches along the top side of the 2nd square (line 1). Turn and repeat and square pattern starting from Row 1.
Repeat adding new squares as done in the 2nd square of line 2 until you have either reached the desired width or the desired number of squares.
Weave in all ends.
