For people who loves the sun and all shades of yellow I decided to knit a hat featuring new cable styles using golden yarn and a pair of needles. I know that knitting a cable hat in the middle of the spring might not be relevant for many, but since I love hat patterns I’m ready to try a new idea each time I have a chance. It also helps me relax, relieve daily stress and stay on the sunny side of life. Take a look at my photos of the hat and if you find them appealing, let’s jump to the pattern and get it done!
Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> 5 Double Pointed Knitting Needles 3.25 mm (UK 10 or US 3) and 4 mm (UK 8 or US 6). You can also use 16” Circular Knitting Needles and magic loop technique to knit in the round;
<> Gazzal (baby wool) Medium 40% Lana Merino, 20% Cashmere Pa, 40% acrylic. Yellow color: 50 grams -100 m per skein – in total 3 balls;
<> For the total beginner I do recommend using counter to follow the whole process.
Knit fisherman’s rib cable hat size:
Adult: 53-56 cm
Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches/10 cm (2 cables)
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two together
k1b – knit one below. Check my Instagram video for more instructions.
p1b – purl one below. Check my Instagram video for more instructions.
Cable 6 Front (C6F): Slip 6 stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the left hand needle, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the extra needle.
Cable 6 Back (C6B): Slip 6 stitches to the extra needle and hold in back of work, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the left hand needle, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the extra needle.
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Ribbing of the fisherman’s rib cable knit hat:
Using 3.25 mm knitting needles cast on 96 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 24. Rib k1, p1 until the piece measures 1 cm (3-4 rounds).
Change needles to 4 mm (or 3.5 mm).
Body of the fisherman’s rib cable knit hat:
Round 1: *k1b, p1, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 2: *k1, p1b, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 3-6: repeat Rounds 1-2.
Round 7: *C6F, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 8: *k1, p1b, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 9: *k1b, p1, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 10: *k1, p1b, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 11-16: Repeat Rounds 9-10.
Round 17: *k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, C6B, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 18: *k1, p1b, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 19: *k1b, p1, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 20: *k1, p1b, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 21-26: Repeat Rounds 19-20.
Repeat Rounds 7-26 until desired hat’s length. I wanted my hat to be a bit slouchy so I repeat Rounds 7-26 3 more times, then I repeat again Rounds 7-14 and move on with shaping the crown.
Shaping the crown of the fisherman’s rib cable knit hat:
Round 1: *skpo, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Round 2: knit all stitches.
Round 3: *skpo, repeat from* to the end of the round.
Cut the yarn leaving 10 cm tail. Draw the end through remaining stitches and fasten securely. Attach fluffy pom pom to top of the Hat.

I have been looking at the pattern for the Sunnyside Fisherman’s Rib hat and can’t make sense of the pattern of the pattern after Round 10. Round 11-16 says to repeat rounds 10-11 but don’t know what row 11 is. It seems to be missing the information for round 11.
Hi Carol. It was misprint. It means repeat Rounds 9-10. Thanks for your help 🙂

Hello again I have a question I hope i make sense about this>I see c6f and following this other stitches follow is the c6f & c6b it’s own stitch as a group and then the stitches that follow are the single stitches . Ty so much have a great day
hi. Not sure what are you talking about. When you knit c6F or c6B you knit all knit stitches as k1b. Let me know if you meant smth else
hello again i was askiing for ex row 7 c6f and then th
hello again i was trying to say for example row 7 is c6f ( k1b,p1 6 times) if i were to follow c6f Slip 6 stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the left hand needle, k1b, p1, k1b, p1, k1b, p1 from the extra needle. then do (k1b,p1 6 times) because it needs the beanie to stretch. Would this be correct? Do i knit 18 sts for the whole row ty again
hi, yes correct. first cable C6F then ( k1b,p1 6 times), but it total 24 stitches, not 18. Repeat those 24 stitches to the end of round
thank you got it have a great day
good luck 🙂
WWhen I was setting up row 7 with markers (I am new to knitting cables) I ended up with 6 extra stitches at the end of the row. I placed a marker at 6 stitches for c6f, 6 stitches, then marker at 12 stitches, repeated 4 times. Had 6 stitches left over at end of row.
As I said I am new to working cables so I must be missing something. Do you have a video demonstrating row 7.
Hi Becky. This hat is a little bit challenging for beginners but I am sure you can do it. I am planning to make a video tutorial for this hat as I get many questions. Seems you are doing everything right. Could you please count how many stitches do you have at the ends of Round 6. After that we can understand where was the mistake done.
Hello,
Can you let me know what yarn weight you use for this project?
Hi. This is Turkish yarn and usually they do not write the weight. but I would say it is DK
Was hoping that this lovely pattern was knitted flat – on two needles. It appears to be knitted in the round. Do ytou have this pattern knitted on only 2 needles.
Hi Jenny. No I dont have. But you can check this scarf pattern and understand the main idea how to knit brioche cables in rows and knit the same cable hat in rows. https://crazyhands.net/sunnyside-cable-scarf-pattern/
Hi! I’ve been looking for those faux fur balls! where can I buy them?
Hi Cristina. Which color you are looking for. You can write me about this question in Instagram or Facebook
