Knitting materials and knitting tools:

- DPN or circular needles, 4 mm (US 6/UK 8)
- Lana d’Irlanda – 100% pure new wool, 190 meters – 100 grams. Color of your choice.
- Weight Category – Aran. Quantity –1-1.5 balls, depends on size. If you have difficulty to find the aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 90-100 m (95-105 yards) per 50 grams skein. Knit with two strands of yarn at once!!!!
- Scrap yarn for provisional cast on method
- Stitch counter or piece of paper to write down knitted rows
- Tapestry needle and crochet hook 4 or 4.5 mm
- Pom pom (optional) – two black/white/natural color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – up to 10-12 cm.
Teddy bear knit hat size:
Age: 1-2 years / 12-24 months
Head circumference: 47-50 cm
Gauge: 16-17 stitches = 4 inches (with two strands of yarn at once)
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit,
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch,
st(s) – stitch(es),
k2tog – knit two together,
ryo – reverse yarn over: bring the yarn to the front over the top of the right needle
To get started with baby hat we are going to use provisional cast on method. There are a couple of ways how to do it. Please use the one you know.
Suggested way: Using smooth piece of scrap yarn (preferably in a different color, so that you can identify it easily later), crochet min chain 36. Take 4 mm knitting needles and starting from the 3d chain pick up 32 stitches through the “bumps” on the back of the chain, that corresponds to the respective size of 12-24 months. Count your stitches when you are done.
Teddy Bear Knit Hat Pattern:
First part:
Row 1: sel s, ryo, k 28, k2tog, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k 29, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Rows 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23: repeat Row 1.
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: Repeat Row 2.
Knit in total 24 rows.
First Tie:
Take the hook and slip the first stitch as to purl. Chain 36 (could be more or less, depending on the preferred tie’s length). Slip stitch in the second chain from hook and in each ch across. Return the last stitch to the left-hand needle.
Second part:
Row 1: sel s (the st that you have just returned from the hook), k 30, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, ryo, k 28, k2tog, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k 29, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23: repeat Row 3.
Knit in total 24 rows.
Third part:
At this point you have knit in total 48 rows.
You have 32 sts on your needles. Please double check.
Row 1: sel s, k 28, k2tog (count ryo of previous row as one stitch and use it for decrease), sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k 29, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k 27, k2tog sel s.
Row 4: sel s, k 28, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, k 26, k2tog, sel s.
Go on making decreases only from one side. Knit in total 22 rows or until you have 21 sts on your needles.
At this point you have knit in total 70 rows.
Fourth part:
Row 1: sel s, k 19, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, ryo, k 19, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k 19, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, ryo, k 20, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, k 20, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Go on making increases only from one side. Knit in total 22 rows or until you have 32 sts on your needles.
At this point you have knit in total 92 rows.
Fifth part:
Row 1: sel s, ryo, k 28, k2tog (count ryo of previous row as one stitch), sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k 29, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Rows 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23: repeat Row 1.
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: Repeat Row 2.
Knit in total 24 rows
At this point you have knit in total 116 rows.
Second Tie:
Repeat all steps that you have done before for the first tie. Please check video tutorial to follow along while knitting.
Sixth part:
Row 1: sel s, k 30, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, ryo, 28, k2tog, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k 29, knit ryo st through the front loop, sel s.
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23: Repeat Row 3.
Knit in total 24 rows.
At this point you have knit in total 140 rows.
And you have 32 sts on your needles.
Cut the yarn, leaving 50-55 cm tail.
Unravel provisional cast-on and get live stitches back onto the needle 32. Sew up the hat behind using horizontal invisible seam method.
Then sew up 3 top angles together.
Teddy bear ears:
Make 2.
Cast on 12 sts.
Row 1: sel s, knit all stitches, sel, s.
Rows 2-28: repeat Row 1.
Bind off. Fold piece in the middles and shape bear’s ear. Sew up sides in the same way as the hat’s crown. Find suitable place and sew them to the hat.
Instead of ears you can add two little pom poms up to 10 -12 cm.

The yarn called for is worsted weight but an option implies that sport or DK can be used doubled. Is that correct?

I just tried to follow this pattern and was stuck on the first step. you’re saying to pick 32 stitches and work row 1. but row 1 needs 33 stitches by the looks of it, is this right? Slip + RYO + k28 + K2tog + purl = 33 stitches?
should I pick 33 stitches and then work with the pattern or still only pick 32 stitches and only k27 in the row one?

Hi Katerina. You pick up 32 sts. After the first row you will have 33 sts as you are going to add 1 sts by doing ryo. Let me know if it is clear. I knot it can be a little bit confusing that is why I have done a video to follow
