We have recently learned how to knit a fish scale stitch and today we will practice it by knitting a lovely fish scale hat. Take your circular needles, a few markers, wool or acrylic yarn, tune in your favourite show and let’s get to it. If you are going to follow the pattern, then make sure you are knitting in the two strands of yarn and don’t twist the stitches while joining. Other than that it’s fairly straight forward, but if you ever get lost – check out video below or ask questions in the comment section. Have fun!
Knitting materials and knitting tools:

<> Fur, faux yarn pom pom
Fish scale knit hat size:

Fish scale knit hat pattern
Knitting the ribbing part:
Using 4 mm knitting needles, cast on 76 stitches or any other number that is divisible by 2. Join being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker for beginning of the round. Rib k1, p1 for 10 rounds or until piece measures 5-6 cm.
Knitting body of the hat:
Change to 5 mm knitting needles.
Round 1: knit all stitches around.
Round 2: knit all stitches around.
Round 3: *k1, s1wyib – repeat from * till the ends of round.
Round 4: *p1, s1wyib – repeat from * till the ends of round.
Repeat Round 1-4 for 19 more times or until hat reaches 19 cm.
Shaping crown of the knit hat:
Round 1: k2tog all the way around.
Round 2: knit all stitches around.
Round 3: k2tog all the way around.
Round 4: k2tog all the way around.
Cut the yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail. Thread tail though remaining stitches and pull tightly. Weave in ends.
Tie pom pom to hat.

Hi Ann,
I noticed that in the first round 2, where you knit all stitches, you actually knit 1, Knit 1 through the back loop, repeat. What’s the reason for that?
Many thanks.
Jessie
No, there is no reason, just everything depends on how the previous round was knit and how I grabbed working yarn. Just knit all stitches as you usually do.
Where do u get the brown labels I always see on hats etc
Ordered from another country
I hace found a 100% cotton yarn 50 g. 73 meters weights l..71oz. will this be enough and suitable for this hat, I would get to balls for doubling the yarn for chunky?
I meant to say 1.75 oz. and two balls(not to)
Hi. I afraid it will be too thick if you knit in 2 strands. Otherwise you might need to cast on a bit less stitches for the ribbing.
So are you saying to use this cotton, one ball only, cast on less stitches, whatever to get a guage of 4×4 inches, and 80 yards will be enough for the toque?
I think you can tell I’m a novice at this and need very clear instructions. I am planning to do the toque on circular needles. The yarn is called “Bernat($279), 100%cotton,50g/1.75oz/73meters/80yards. Guage 4 medium worsted.
Use single rather than double strand??
No, I meant that if you are going to knit in one strand of yarn you need to cast on more stitches than in pattern, but if in 2 strands then most probably less stitches. I would say 86-90 ( 1 strand) but it is better to check your gauge by knitting a swatch.
Hi Ann
I love this clever fish scale stitch and your very clear video. Thank you.
Would 2 balls of Aran 50g knitted together be enough to knit the hat? I’m going to try circular needles for the first time!
Best wishes for 2021
Michele
Hi Michele, Thank you for your wishes. I afraid to say that 2 balls will be enough. My hat was around 100 grams, so it could be enough but I can not guarantee. Happy Holidays for you too!
Thank you Ann.
Regards
Michele

Hi, What do you mean by more detail. There is a video tutorial, please check it. Ot do you want to knit this hat in round?
Could you please tell me what weight Super Corfou yarn is?
It looks like Aran for me. Or something between DK and medium worsted
