Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or straight needles 4 mm (US 6 / UK8)
Long mink wool (Cashmere) yarn – 75% wool, 25% nylon: 50 grams – 338 m per skein. Note: Knit with 2 strands of main and 1 strand of reinforcing (partner) yarn together..
Knit warm bandana size:
Height: 28 cm (11 in)
Width (without ties): 40 cm (15.7 in)
Width (with ties): 74 cm (33 in)
Gauge: 18 sts = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
KYOK – Knit Yarn Over Knit through Two Stitches: insert your needle through two stitches as if to knit, knit them together, yarn over, and knit through the same stitches again.
KYOK tbl – Knit Yarn Over Knit Through Back Loops: insert your needle through the back loops of two stitches, knit them together, yarn over, and knit through the same two back loops again.
Warm bandana (kerchief) knitting pattern:
Cast on a multiple of 7 stitches.
Row 1: sel s, KYOK, k1, KYOK tblo, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, KYOK, k3, KYOK tblo, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, KYOK, k5, KYOK tblo, sel s.
Row 6: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 7: sel s, KYOK, k7, KYOK tblo, sel s.
Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Continue knitting, repeating the last two rows and making increases until the bandana measures 28 cm (11 in) in height.
Ties: With the wrong side of the bandana facing you, cast on 30 stitches. Turn.
Row 1: knit all stitches across, cast on 30 stitches.
Row 2: knit all stitches across, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Bind off using the Scandinavian Bind-Off technique.
Scandinavian Bind-Off: *Insert the tip of the right-hand needle purlwise into the first stitch, holding it in front of the work, then insert the tip of the same needle knitwise into the second stitch. Wrap the yarn and pull it through. Slip both stitches off the left-hand needle. Return the stitch from the right-hand needle to the left-hand needle. Repeat from * until all stitches are bound off.
