Newborn Baby Cable Knit Hat Pattern

Knitting materials and knitting tools:

<> 4 Double Pointed Knitting Needles or 16” Circular Knitting Needles 3.5 mm (US 4)

<> Red Heart: Soft Touch (4) – 100% Acrylic.

<> Fur or yarn pom pom optionally

Newborn baby knit hat size:

Head circumference: 36-40 cm

Gauge: 19-20 sts – 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

st(s) – stitch(es)

k2tog – knit two together.

C3F – Cable 3 Front: Slip 3 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, k3 from the left hand needle, k3 from the extra needle.

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

Cable knit hat pattern for a newborn baby

Ribbing the baby hat:

Cast on 56 stitches. Place marker and join yarn.

Rounds 1-10: [ k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round. Ribbing part must measure about 4 cm.

Body of the newborn cable hat:

The main pattern has to be divisible by 10, that is why we are going to add 4 sts to get in total 60.

For all my previous projects I have used the same method as I believe it’s easy and accurate. Please use any methods you know or check the one shown below.

Round 11: knit all stitches around and add 4 extra stitches at random (doesn’t matter where exactly you add them).

Round 12: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 13: knit all stitches around.

Round 14: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 15: [C3F, k4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 16: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 17: knit all stitches around.

Round 18: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 19: knit all stitches around.

Round 20: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 21: knit all stitches around.

Round 22: [k6, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 23: [C3F, k4] – repeat till the end of round.

Repeat Rounds 16-23 one more time and after that repeat Rounds 16-18.

At this point my hat measures about 12 cm.

Shaping the crown of newborn baby hat:

Round 1: [skpo, k2, k2tog, k4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 2: [k4, p4] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 3: [ k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 4: [k3, p3] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 5: [skpo, k1, k2tog, k1] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 6: [k2, p2] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 7: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 8: [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round.

Round 9: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.

Cut the yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail and thread it onto a tapestry needle. Thread tail through remaining stitches. Weave in remaining ends and block as desired.
