Knitting any sort of baby items is something that brings me a lot of pleasure. It’s especially true when you can actually try the finished item on a cute 8 months model that can’t really say no to you. I chose to knit a double layer pixie hat this time, cause it also has a unique look and an option to choose the color (in case your baby has a preferred color or if your little explorer left a few greasy fingerprints on one side). Have fun knitting my version of pixie hat for babies.
Knitting materials and tools:
<> Circular Knitting Needles 3.25 mm or 3.5 mm (US 3/UK 10) for the ribbing part and inner layer of the hat and 4 mm (US 6/UK 8) for the main part;
<> Gazzal (baby wool XL) Medium 40% Lana Merino, 20% Cashmere Pa, 40% acrylic. Teal blue and yellow colors: 50 grams -100 m per skein – 1 ball – teal blue and 1 ball -yellow color;
Knit double layer baby pixie hat size:
Baby (6-18 months): 46-50 cm
Gauge: 20 stitches = 10 cm/4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two together
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done
pm – place marker
m1r – make 1 right: pick up bar bringing left hand needle from the front to the back, then knit the bar through the back loop.
m1l – make 1 left: pick up bar bringing left hand needle from the back to the front, then knit the bar through the front loop.
Calculate any size of double layer baby pixie knit hat:
My 8 months baby head circumference is about 45 cm, so I decided to knit a hat with circumference 46 cm (18 inches).
1 cm = 2 sts
46*2 = 92 sts
Add extra 15% of stitches for knitting prolonged ears. 92 sts *15% = 106 sts.
I ended up with finished hat’s circumference slightly bigger than 46 cm. It will be perfect even for 12-18 months baby.

Cut the yarn, thread through final 12 stitches and pull tight.
Knitting outer layer of baby pixie hat:
Now change the yarn color and switch to 3.25 or 3.5 mm knitting needles to make your inner hat’s layer smaller than the upper one. Turn the hat inside out and pick up only knit stitches at the very last round of the ribbing (knit stitches on the wrong side are the purl stitches on the right side). Each knit stitch has 2 bars so in total you pick up 53 stitches. (53*2=106 sts).
The inner layer of the hat will be knitted in the opposite direction compared to the outer one.

Knitting ties of the double layer baby pixie hat
Using 4 mm knitting needles pick up 4 stitches and knit an i-cord until tie reaches 20 cm (8 inches). Weave in ends.
Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan them, and it turns out that even using smaller needle’s size, hat’s inner layer is bigger than outer one 😊. Yeah, it happens. I was also a bit out of the teal blue color, so I had to finish hat with the yellow one.
