Knitting materials and knitting tools:
- Double-pointed or circular knitting needles 4 mm (US 6/UK 8).
- Sorbet, Pingouin –50% acrylic, 30% Nylon, 10% mohair, 10% wool, 50 grams -100 m (110 yards) per skein.
- Weight Category – Aran. Quantity –2 balls. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 90-100 m (110 yards) per 50 grams skein.
- Pom pom – black/white/purple color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – 15-16-17 cm.
Sage knit hat size:
Head circumference: 56-60 cm (22-23”).
Gauge: 17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
K2tog – knit two together
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done
P2tog – purl two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over
Pattern of sage knit hat with folded brim:
Using long tail method cast on 100 stitches or any other number divisible by 5. Place marker and join to knit in the round.
Round 1: [p3, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: repeat Round 1.
Round 3: [p3, k1, now insert the right-hand needle underneath the second bar between the last and next stitch and draw up a long loop, k1, draw up the second loop by inserting the needle underneath the same bar] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [p3, k2tog, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rounds 1- 4 until hat’s brim measures 8-9 cm from the edge.
I have done 20 rounds.
Round 21: [p3, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 22: [p3, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Turn the hat wrong side out because we are going to knit in opposite direction. Check video tutorial for more instructions.
Round 23: yo, pm, [p3, k2] – repeat till the end of round. When you reach last stitch, k2tog (last stitch and yo).
Round 24: [p3, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 25: [p3, k1, now insert the right-hand needle underneath the second bar between the last and next stitch and draw up a long loop, k1, draw up the second loop by inserting the needle underneath the same bar] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 26: [p3, k2tog, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rounds 1-4 until the hat measures 18 -19 cm (without brim)
Shaping hat’s crown:
Round 1: [p1, p2tog, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2: [p2, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 3: [p2, k1, now insert the right-hand needle underneath the second bar between the last and next stitch and draw up a long loop, k1, draw up the second loop by inserting the needle underneath the same bar] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [p2, k2tog, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 5: [p2tog, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 6: [p1, k2] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 7: [p1, k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 8: [p1, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 9: [k2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Break yarn and leave 10 cm tail. Thread end through remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends securely.
Add yarn, faux or real fur pom pom.
