Summer is my favourite time for knitting – I have 7 projects on my needles and I would have even more projects if I were to have more needles sets. During the summer heat I am more productive and creative than during any other time. I’m full of ideas for new patterns and have enough energy to finish them along with all my house chores, exercise, and project sharing on social media. Today I’m happy to present a bulky snowflake hat pattern – simple and quick in the making chunky hat but with a flavour of chilli pepper in its look. Follow the instructions below and enjoy knitting!
Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> Circular (40 cm) or double pointed knitting needles, size 9 (US 13/UK 0)
<> Chunky yarn – Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice. In total 140 grams.
Snowflake knit hat size:
Adult: 54-58 cm
Gauge: 10 stitches in = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
p2tog – purl two together
Body of the bulky knitting hat:
Using long tail method cast on 44 stitches or any other number divisible by 2. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker. Rib k1, p1 for 8 rows or until pieces measures 6 cm.
Row 1: purl all stitches around.
Row 2: [p1, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Row 3: purl all stitches around.
Row 4: [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Repeat Rows 1- 4 until hat measures 19 cm from the edge. In my case I repeat Rows 1-4 four more times and then repeat again Rows 1-2.
Shaping the crown of snowflake chunky hat:
Row 1: [p2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Row 2: [p1, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Row 3: [p2tog] – repeat till the end of round.
Row 4: [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Fasten off leaving 10 cm tail. Weave tail through remaining 11 stitches. Pull tail to close top. Weave in all ends securely.
Add your favorite faux or real fur pom pom.

Love this! It was my first project that wasn’t a dishcloth, and my first time knitting in the round. It was easy to do, and turned out beautifully!

My first knit hat that turned out nice! I’ve only made 1 other, but the top was so bulky it just looked bad. This one reduced stitches and got rid of that bulk! I lost my ability to walk and decided to learn to knit to keep busy and I love it. I will be trying more. I have a lot more to learn.

I was wondering if you had the pattern for the knit gloves in the photo with the hat? If you do, can I please get the pattern? I would like to make it to keep me warm in the winter. Hi…there was a snowflake hat that was done and the color hat pink, aqua, beige in it. I have a photo. Was wondering what color yarn this was or brand of yarn. Would love to make one just like it.
It could be Alize baby wool when I was knitting in 2 strands of yarn together.

Hi Ann I don’t seem to be getting the pattern right for the snowflake bulky hat. This the 4th time I’ve made it and it always looks wrong. It doesn’t look like your. My hat looked better on the wrong side, following all instructions, still looks nice but nothing like in the picture, knitted in the round on DPNs
Hi Shelly. Do not know where is the problem. I have seen many hats already knitted with this pattern.
I think I know what mistake you made; you might’ve knit with the needles working inside the round instead of outside. I just made mittens and I kept setting up my knitting in the round wrong so I was always working the ‘top’ side on my round instead of the ‘bottom’ side, which meant my needles were basically working inside the round instead of outside. Once I switched it so that my working yarn was coming from the top needle and I was picking up my stitches from the bottom needle, it both got easier and made my pattern make sense, instead of being the exact opposite of what I wanted. I only noticed this because after doing all my ribbing, the body was supposed to be stockinette but it was coming out garter. That made me realize I must be ‘pointing’ the wrong way somehow!

How could I adjust it to fit a 2.5 years old toddler?
I would like to knit with a super bulky yarn I have (weight 6) – the label says that using 6.5mm needles with 10 sts over 14 rows would yield a 10cm*10cm (gauge).
Could you please help me adjust the pattern to fit the yarn I have and to a toddler size?
