Flat Knit Cable Hat Pattern

Knitting materials and tools:

<> 16” Circular Knitting Needles or straight needles 5 mm (US8/UK6). Use 5.5 mm knitting needles if you are a tight knitter.

<> Lion Brand, Color Made Easy (5) – 100% Acrylic, 200 grams – 226 meters;

<> Weight Category – Bulky. Quantity – less than 100 grams. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100-110 m (110-120 yards) per 100 grams skein.

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

K – knit

P – purl

Pm – place marker

Cable 2 Front (C2F): Slip next 2 stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, k2 from the left-hand needle, k2 from the extra needle.

K2tog – knit two together

p2tog – purl two together

st(s) – stitch(es)

yo – yarn over.  Lay the working yarn over the right needle from front to back.

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

WS – wrong side

Knitting the ribbing of flat cable hat

Using 5 mm knitting needles, cast on 74 stitches or any other number multiple by 6 plus 2 selvage stitches.

Row 1 (WS): sel s, [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Row 2: sel s, [k4, p2] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Rows 3 -10: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 or until ribbing reaches 5.5 – 6 cm. If you end up with a different number of rows, then the last row will always be even.

Knitting the body of flat cable hat

Row 1(WS): sel s, [k2, p1, yo, p1, yo, p1, yo, p1, yo] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Row 2: sel s, [(drop yo stitch off the needle and slip next stitch to the right-hand needle) – repeat 4 times, return back to the left-hand needle 4 slipped sts and knit C2F, p2] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Row 3: sel s, [k2, p4] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Row 4: sel s, [k4, p2] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Repeat Rows 1-4 until hat reaches 20-21 cm. Finish body part by knitting Row 2.

Shaping the crown of flat cable hat

Row 1 (WS): sel s, [k2tog, p2tog, p2tog] – repeat till the end of row, sel s, turn.

Row 2: sel s, [k2tog, p1] – repeat till the end of row, sel s.

Cut the yarn leaving long tail (50 cm min). Thread the tail with a large yarn needle. Pull the tail through remaining stitches. Now line up two sides by pinching them together with right side facing out. Use stitch markers to help yourself. Make sure you have found first stitch on each side otherwise you may end up with lopsided seam.

Insert your needle underneath the two bars between two sel s on the right side and draw yarn through, after that insert the needle underneath the two bars between two sel s on the left side and draw the yarn through again. Go on seaming up picking up bars on the right and on the left sides. Weave in ends.
