Knit Inset Pocket Pattern

Knitting materials and tools:

<> Straight or DPN 4 mm (US 6/ UK 8)

<> Caron, Simply Soft (4) – 100% acrylic. 

<> extra needle or stitch holder.

Knit inset pocket size:

Gauge: 18 sts – 10 cm (4 inches).

Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

WS – wrong side

RS – right side

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

ryo – reverse yarn over: lay the working yarn over the right needle from back to front.

Inset pocket knitting pattern:

Cast on 32 stitches. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 4 rows, then continue knitting until you reach the point where the pocket will be placed.

For the pocket, find the central 20 sts and place stitch markers on both sides.

Row 1 (RS): sel s, k3, k5, [ryo, k1] – repeat 20 times, k5, sel s.

Row 2 (WS): sel s, p5, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – repeat 20 times, p5, sel s.

Row 3 (RS): sel s, k5, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, k1] – 20 times, k5, sel s.

Row 4 (WS): sel s, p5,  [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 20 times. Do not knit the last 6 stitches and turn the work.

Row 5 (RS): [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, k1] – 20 times. Do not knit the last 6 stitches and turn the work.

Row 6 (WS):  [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 20 times, p5, sel s.

Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

Row 8: Repeat Row 4.

Row 9: Repeat Row 5.

Row 10: Repeat Row 6.

Repeat Rows 3-6 until you reach the desired pocket height.

Finish knitting the pocket with Row 3 as the next row.

In the next step, we’ll begin knitting the ribbing for the front part and after separate the pocket from the main piece.

Pocket ribbing 1×1:

Row 1: sel s, k5, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, k1, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 10 times, k5, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, p5, [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 20 times. Do not knit the last 6 stitches and turn the work.

Row 3: [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, k1, slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 10 times. Do not knit the last 6 stitches and turn the work.

Row 4: [slip the next stitch holding working yarn in front, p1] – 20 times, p5, sel s.

Repeat the last 4 rows once more.

Row 5: sel s, k5, [slip next stitch to the extra needle and hold it in back, slip next stitch to the right-hand needle and hold it in front] – 20 times. Return 20 stitches from the right-hand needle to the left-hand needle and bind them off as follows: k1, p1, slip over, *k1, slip over, p1, slip over—repeat from * until 6 stitches remain; k5, sel s.

Row 6: sel s purl all stitches (including those from the extra needle), sel s.

Continue knitting in stockinette stitch or the required stitch pattern.
