Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or straight knitting needles 4.5 mm (US7/UK 7). You’ll need DPNs to knit the ties. Crochet hook 4-4.5 mm.
Loop&Threads, Soft&Shiny – 100% acrylic. Color of your choice.
Weight Category – 4. Quantity – 105-110 grams.
Knit whimsy pixie hat size:
Head circumference: Teen/Adult: 53-59 cm (21-23”)
Gauge: 17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
pm – place marker
WS – wrong side
RS – right side
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Whimsy pixie hat knitting pattern:
Knit body of the pixie hat:
Using the long tail method, cast on 88 sts.
Rows 1-10: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. This part measures 4 cm (1.5 in)
Row 11: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 12: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Repeat Rows 11 and 12 until the stockinette section of the hat measures 21 cm (8.2″).
Divide all stitches in half and fold the hat in half. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of at least 1 meter (40″). Using a yarn needle and the Kitchener stitch, seam the top of the hat closed. For detailed instructions, refer to the video tutorial.
Creating the tie opening:
Fold the garter stitch section upward to give the hood a fuller, more structured look. Using a crochet hook (or directly with your knitting needles), pick up and knit stitches along the bottom edge of the hat. Turn.
Important: Where the garter stitch section is folded, make sure to pick up stitches through both layers of fabric — this happens at the beginning and end of the folded section.
Row 1 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 2 (RS): sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 3 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Repeat Rows 2-3 until the piece measures 7.5-8 cm (3 in). I completed a total of 15 rows.
To form the tie opening, fold the edge of the hat to the inside. Using a crochet hook, insert it into the next stitch on the needle, then into the back loop of the corresponding stitch formed when you picked up stitches along the edge. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook (similar to a slip stitch).
Repeat this process across the folded section. You’ll create a neatly joined edge that forms a channel for threading an I-cord or tie.
Knitting an i-cord:
To knit an i-cord, I used dpn. Cast on 4 sts, slide them to the right side of the needle so the working yarn is coming from the left. Knit 4, slide to the right, and repeat until the i-cord measures about 85 cm (33.5 inches). Thread an i-cord through the channel.
