Flat knit Christmas socks pattern:

MAKE TWO.

Knitting ribbing of Christmas socks

Using red yarn color cast on 45 sts or any other number multiple of 4, plus 3 extra sts, plus 2 selvage sts.

Rows 1 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 3 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Cut the yarn. Change yarn color from red to white. In the next round, when you change color, always knit the first stitch instead of slipping it. Doing it this way you will not have jogs when you start seaming up socks.

Row 4: k1, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 5 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 6: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 7 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 8: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 9 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 10: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 11 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 12: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Rows 13 (WS): sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

The ribbing at this point measures 6 cm. Do not cut the yarn. Change the yarn color from white to red.

Knitting body part of Christmas socks:

Row 1: k1, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k3, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, [p3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, p3, sel s.

Change the yarn color from red to white. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 3: k1, [p1, k1, p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, k1, p1, sel s.

Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Change the yarn color from white to red. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 5: k1, k1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 6: sel s, p1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, [p3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.

Change the yarn color from red to white.

Row 7: k1, [p1, k1, p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, k1, p1, sel s.

Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Now we need to divide all stitches in 3 parts and knit the central part only.

45 sts / 3 = 15 sts

15/15/15

The number of stitches for central part as for the main sock pattern must be multiple of 4 plus 3 extra stitches and plus 2 selvage stitches.

15 – 3 extra st – 2 sel st = 10 st

Closest multiple of 4 will be 8 st.

Now add back 3 extra st and 2 sel st to 8 st = 13 st.

Since we had 15 st, now we have to equally divide 2 extra stitches on the sides and we will end up with 16/13/16 division of stitches.

Knitting central part of Christmas socks:

It would be nice if you can find two new tails from the center of your skeins, otherwise cut two colors, and use them for knitting the central part. When you change color for the central part, slip first stitch without knitting it.

Row 1 (red color): slip first 16 sts to the right-hand needle, sel s, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat twice, k3, sel s. Turn.

Row 2: sel s, [p3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat twice, p3, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from red to white. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 3: sel s, [p1, k1, p1, k1] – repeat twice, p1, k1, p1, sel s. Turn.

Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from white to red. Do not cut the yarn.

Row 5: sel s, k1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat twice, k1, sel s. Turn

Row 6: sel s, p1, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front, [p3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – twice, p1, sel s. Turn.

Change the yarn color from red to white.

Row 7: sel s, [p1, k1, p1, k1] – repeat twice, p1, k1, p1, sel s. Turn.

Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn.

Repeat Rows 1-8 for the central part four more times. The central part will be around 14 cm. Finish knitting your last row with white color. The number of rows for the central part has to be divisible by 8.

Return 16 stitches to the left-hand needle. Attach new tail if you cut the yarn before.

Row 1 (red color): k1, sel s, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, k3. After that we will pick up stitches around the central part. Pick up 20 stitches along the right side, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back, pick up 20 stitches along the left side, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat 3 times, k3, sel s. Turn. (85 stitches)

Row 2: sel s, [p3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, p3, sel s.

Change the yarn color from red to white. Do not cut the yarn.

Cut the yarn leaving the 25-30 cm tail.

*Pick up 2 bars right between two selvage stitches and pull the yarn through. On the other side, pick up again 2 bars between two selvage stitches and pull the yarn through. Repeat from * until you join two edges on the heel.

I need some clarification on the pattern. some rows instruct you to “repeat till the end, k1, sel s.” how can I repeat to the end of the row and still do the k1, sel s? Should it be repeat to the last two stitches and then complete the row as written?

I have a question about gauge for this pattern. The pattern states “18 sts- 4in”; is that 18 garter stitches, or…? I have started to make the slippers but my measurements are off, and I was wondering what sort of gauge swatch to make to get my needle size correct. Thanks!

18 sts stockinette usually. What type of yarn are you using and size of needles. Tell me the gauge you received.

Thank you for your response. I am using worsted weight yarn, and found that size 5 needles fit the gauge as far as number of stitches go. However, it is still coming out short; to make the ribbing section 6cm I had to add two rows. In order to make the center part longer, could I add just rows 1-4 again (and then picking up 2 more stitches on each side), or would I have to do all 8 rows (picking up 4 more stitches on each side)?
Thanks for the beautiful pattern!

I afraid you need to knit 8 rows, or pick up 4 stitches instead of 2. The final number has to be multiple of 4 sts + 3 extra sts + 2 sel s
