Knitting materials and tools:
<> Double-pointed knitting needles 5.5 mm (US 9/UK 5).
<> Color Made Easy, Lion Brand –100% acrylic, 200 grams -226 m per skein.
<> Weight Category – 5. Quantity – less than 1 ball. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100 m (110 yards) per 100 grams skein.
Puff stitch knit hat size:
Head circumference: Teen/Adult: 53-58 cm (21-23”)
Gauge: 12-13 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
k6tog – knit six together
k2tog – knit two together
p2tog – purl two together
p – purl
Puff stitch hat knitting pattern:
Knitting the body of a puff stitch hat
Using long tail method cast on 68 stitches or any other number divisible by 4. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker. Rib k1, p1 until piece reaches 5 cm
Round 1-4: *p3, k1 – repeat from * till the end.
Round 5: *p3, count down 3 stitches starting from the stitch underneath the stitch on the needle. Insert the needle into the 3d st and draw up a loop (you are going to have a long loop), yarn over, insert the needle into the same st and draw up the second loop, yarn over, insert the needle into the same st and draw up the third loop, k1 – repeat from * till the end.
Round 6: *p3, k6tog – repeat from
Repeat Rounds 1-6, three more times or until hat reaches 16-17 cm.
Shaping the crown of a puff stitch knit hat:
Round 1: [p2tog, p1, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 2-3: [p2, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 4: [p2tog, k1] – repeat till the end of round.
Round 5: [p1, count down 3 stitches starting from the stitch underneath the stitch on the needle. Cut yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail. Use hook or tapestry needle to pull yarn tail through the remaining stitches. Pull tight to close the hole. Weave in ends.
