Gauge: 19 stitches = 4 inches

Note for knitters:

Knit with two strands of yarn at once.

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

k2tog – knit two together

k3tog – knit three together

p2tog – purl two together

inc - increase

Cable 5 Back (C5B): Slip 5 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in back of work, 5k from the left hand needle, 5k from the extra needle.

Cable 5 Front (C5F): Slip 5 knit stitches to the extra needle and hold in front of work, 5k from the left hand needle, 5k from the extra needle.

Knit the ribbing:

Cast on 92 stitches for the hat.

Round 1: Begin with rib 1 by 1 *knit 1, purl 1* and work until piece measures 5 cm from the edge.

Knitting the body of the hat:

Round 1: In this round of knitting a hat, we are going to increase. As usually I am using a method - knit one stitch from the previous round. There are a lot of ways to make an increase, so if you don’t like my method, check any other one that you find more appealing. The total number of stitches at the end must be divided by 17 so for my measurement I will add 10 more stitches (102 stitches). The number of extra stitches may vary according to the hat’s measurements.

1st needle: p2, inc, k10, inc, k3, p2, k3, inc, k3;

2nd needle: k5, inc, k2, p2, k8, inc, k6;

3rd needle: p2, inc, k10, inc, k3, p2, k3, inc, k3;

4th needle: k5, inc, k2, p2, k8, inc, k6;

If you are using circular needles just knit every needle one by one.

Rounds 2-10: *p2, k15 repeat from * to the end.

Round 11: *p2, C5B, k5 repeat from * to the end.

Rounds 12-20: *p2, k15 repeat from * to the end.

Round 21: *p2, k5, C5F repeat from * to the end.

Repeat rounds 2-21 two more times. Repeat rounds 2-11 one more time.

From this point we start decreasing the hat.

Round 1: *p2, k2tog, k11, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 2: *p2, k2tog, k9, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 3: *p2, k2tog, k7, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 4: *p2, k2tog, k5, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 5: *p2, k2tog, k3, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 6: *p2, k2tog, k1, k2tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 7: *p2, k3tog repeat from * to the end.

Round 8: *p2tog, k1 repeat from * to the end.

Using tapestry needle or hook thread through remaining 12 stitches and pull tight to close the hole. Weave in all ends.

The last step would be choosing on fur pom pom and tying it on top of the hat. Good variety of fur pom poms for hats you can buy in our online store.

    hello i am trying your winter cable knit hat i am using the needles 3.5 mm you said but my touque is 62 cm around and quite big also the c4b do you put all four stiches on the needle or just half i googled the stitch and it said to use half of the stiches but your touque is quite abit more pronounced too make smaller size would i drop 24 st for the size
    thank you

      Hi Sheila,
      Concerning your c4b question – yes, I put 4 stitches on the needle as shown on the pics. I think that you get such a big circumference due to bulkier/heavier yarn you used to knit your hat or due to loose-knit. Maybe try to use a lighter yarn for this project or knit tighter. Please let me know if this helps.

    Hello do you think this hat would fit someone with 57 or 58cm in head circumference (and thick hair)? My boyfriend and I have pretty big heads but I wanted to make two for us 😀

      Oh and I have another question:
      I just figured I could just try to knit the hat with bigger needles so I knit a gauge swatch with 4,5mm needles. My swatch was a lot smaller than the suggested one with 3,5mm needles. Was it a mistake to make the gauge in a ribbing pattern? Is your gauge for stockinette?
      Sorry, I’m kind of a beginner so it would be nice if you could help me.
      Thank you 🙂

        Dear Julia,
        Thank you for your questions.
        My head circumference is 56-57 cm and this hat suits me well.
        Yes, as you said you can use larger number of needles or bulky yarn for example. In worst case you can add extra stitch between cables (in total 3 purl stitches)
        My gauge was shown for stockinette, So please measure your swatch (stretch it a bit while measuring) and recalculate the number of stitches for you head. Please let me know if you have any questions, I am always here to help.
        So excited to see family look set. 🙂

    I think there is a big mistake in the beginning of the pattern. You have it CO 92, then you say you are increasing to 102 sts, and you give instructions on how you do that. However, if you count the sts (including the increases) it’s only 80 something sts being made. Is something missing? I have made this hat twice now and just did a knit/increase row to get to the 102 stitches.

      Hi Lisarie,
      thanks a lot for pointing this out, I indeed made a mistake. I’ve corrected it and added a picture to make increase more clear. Please let me know about any other mistake or difficulty you might encounter and I’ll definitely help you.
      Have a great day!
      Ciao, Ann
