Knitting materials and tools:
<> 4 Double Pointed Knitting Needles or 16” Circular Knitting Needles 3 mm (UK 11)
<> Red Heart: Soft Touch (4) – 100% acrylic yarn. !!!If you are going to use medium worsted weight yarn you will get a newborn socks size. To knit a preemie size socks use fine (or light) weight yarn!!!
<> Hook or tapestry needle
Knit preemie baby socks size:
Preemie or newborn size of socks depends on the yarn weight. You do not need to change the size of the needles.
Gauge: 24 sts – 4 inches (10 cm)
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
st(s) – stitch(es)
pm – place stitch marker
k2tog – knit two together
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch.
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Preemie baby socks knitting pattern:
MAKE TWO.
Knitting the cuff:
Cast on 28 and redistribute them between 3 needles. Cast on an extra stitch if you are going to use an invisible joining method.
Rounds 1-8: [k1, p1] – repeat till the end of round.
Rounds 9-18: knit all stitches around.
Knitting heel flap:
To be more convenient I suggest slipping first 14 sts to one needle, and other stitches redistribute between another 2 needles. From this point we are going to knit in rows.
Row 1: sel s, k12, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k1, p10, k1, sel s.
Repeat Rows 1-2 four more times.
After you finished the heel flap, you are going to turn the heel.
Row 11: sel s, k7, k2tog, turn and do not finish the row.
Row 12: sel s, p2, p2tog, turn.
Row 13: sel s, k2, k2tog, turn.
Row14: sel s, p2, p2tog, turn.
Row 15: sel s, k2, k2tog, turn.
Row16: sel s, p2, p2tog, turn.
Row 17: sel s, k2, k2tog, turn.
Row18: sel s, p2, p2tog, turn.
Row 19: sel s, k2, k2tog, turn.
Row20: sel s, p2, p2tog, turn.
Now it is time to pick up stitches from the gusset and knit in rounds again.
Round 1: sel s, k3, pick up 5 sts (one stitch through every stitch of the edge), k14, pm to mark beginning of the round, pick up 5 sts.
Round 2: knit all stitches around.
Repeat Round 2 until sole (from the turning point) measures 6 cm.
Shaping the toe:
Round 1: [k4, k2tog, k2, skpo, k4] – repeat twice.
Round 2: knit all stitches around
Round 3: [k3, k2tog, k2, skpo, k3] – repeat twice.
Round 4: knit all stitches around
Round 5: [k2, k2tog, k2, skpo, k2] – repeat twice.
Round 6: [k1, k2tog, k2, skpo, k1] – repeat twice.
Round 7: [ k2tog, k2, skpo] – repeat twice.
Cut the yarn, leaving 10 cm tail. Using tapestry needle thread it through remaining stitches. Weave in all ends.
Repeat for the second sock.
Knit matching newborn hat or preemie hat to get a set.

I ae knitted the basic beanie for a prem baby & it has turned out very well. The next time I was knitting, I casted on 54 sts & in shaping the top, I still used the kn.6 knit 2tog 7 it worked out very well. I am very pleased with the final product. After I have knitted a lot of beanies, I donate them to the Maternity Ward of our local hospital.
God bless you Barbara. Thank you for the feedback!
