Knitting materials and tools:
5 Double Pointed Knitting Needles 4 mm (UK8 / US 6). You can use 16” Circular Knitting Needles and magic loop technique to knit in the round.
Long mink wool (Cashmere) – 75% wool, 25% nylon :50 grams – 358 m per skein. Note: Knit with 2 strands of main and 1 strand of reinforcing (partner) yarn together.
Weight Category – Fingering. Quantity – 2 balls. !!!!!Check your gauge before knitting!!!!!!
Waste yarn for provisional cast on.
8 stitch markers.
Double layer reversible knit hat size:
Head circumference: 54-58 cm (21-22”).
Gauge: 17 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
Pm – place marker
k2tog – knit two together
skpo - Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch, and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
st(s) – stitch(es)
Two-colors double layer hat knitting pattern:
Holding the waste yarn in front (on your thumb) and working yarn in back (on your index finger), leave a short tail and start casting on 92 stitches like if you would cast on with a long tail method. Cut the waste yarn and start knitting in rounds.
Round 1: knit all stitches around.
Repeat Round 1 until the hat reaches 21-22 cm.
Shaping the crown of the double layer knit hat:
Before shaping the crown place stitch markers in the following way:
1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm.
Round 1: [k1, k2tog, k18, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 2-3: knit all stitches around.
Round 4: [k1, k2tog, k16, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 5-6: knit all stitches around.
Round 7: [k1, k2tog, k14, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 8: knit all stitches around.
Round 9: [k1, k2tog, k12, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 10: knit all stitches around.
Round 11: [k1, k2tog, k10, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 12: knit all stitches around.
Round 13: [k1, k2tog, k8, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 14: knit all stitches around.
Round 15: [k1, k2tog, k6, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 16: knit all stitches around.
Round 17: [k1, k2tog, k4, skpo] – repeat 4 times.
Round 18: knit all stitches around.
Round 19: [k1, k2tog, k2, skpo] – repeat 4 times. (20 sts).
Cut the yarn leaving 10 cm tail. Using a hook or a yarn needle thread the tail through the remaining 20 stitches. Weave in ends.
Now it is time to get rid of waste yarn. Find the first stitch, cut the waste yarn and place the live loop onto your needle. Repeat for all other stitches, unravel the chain and pick up all stitches. Double count your stitches to make sure you picked up all 92.
Attach a new or same color yarn.
Round 1: knit all stitches around.
Repeat Round 1 for the same number of rounds or length as the first layer.
Pay attention that you must weave in all ends before you close the second crown.
As we are knitting in the opposite direction now the stitch markers for the crown must be placed in the following way:
22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm, 22 sts, pm, 1 sts, pm
Round 1: [k2tog, k18, skpo, k1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 2-3: knit all stitches around.
Round 4: [k2tog, k16, skpo, k1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 5-6: knit all stitches around.
Round 7: [k2tog, k14, skpo, k1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 8: knit all stitches around.
Round 9: [k2tog, k12, skpo, k1] – repeat 4 times.
Round 10: knit all stitches around.
Go on making decreases as for the first layer. Close the hat’s crown and weave in end on the right side, inserting the needles underneath the remaining stitches at least two or three times. You can also use the tail to attach the inner and the upper layers.
Once you finish knitting the hat it might look perfectly nice, just wash it and dry flat to even out the tension between all the stitches.

I have seen someone was using Lion Brand Heartland 130 Bryce canyon, also Novita 7 Veljestä Solids, also Knit Picks Palette
I am having trouble getting gauge. I’m using two strands of fingering weight yarn. US size 6 & 7 needles produce a smaller gauge. I think my knitting tension is somewhere in the middle. I guess I’ll have to go up to US 8 which seems unusual. Do you knit loosely?

Hi Gayle. I would go on with 6 and 7. This hat is really stretchy because of stockinette stitch. I usually knit somewhere in the middle, not too tight and not too loose
