Knitting materials and tools:
Double-pointed or circular knitting needles 6 cm (US 10/UK 4).
Roving, Bernat – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice.
Weight Category – 5. Quantity – 102 grams. If you have difficulty finding the aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 100 m (110 yards) per 100-gram skein.
Pom pom – black/white/purple color. Material – natural fur / faux fur / yarn pom pom. Size – 15-16-17 cm.
Chunky knit men’s slouchy hat size:
Head circumference: 56-58 cm (21-22”).
Gauge: 13 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
K – knit
P – purl
P1b – purl one below
Pm – place marker
P2tog – purl two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
Chunky slouchy men’s hat knitting pattern:
Using the long tail method, cast on 62 stitches. For the main hat pattern, the number of stitches needs to be multiple of 7. Therefore, after the ribbing, add one more stitch to reach a total of 63 stitches. For the smaller size, cast on 56 stitches, which is already a multiple of 7. Place marker and join to knit in the round.
Rounds 1,3,5,7,9,11: [k1, p1] – repeat around.
Rounds 2,4,6,8,10: [k1, p1b] – repeat till the end of the round.
Knit an odd number of rounds for the ribbing until it measures 5 cm.
Knitting the body of chunky men’s slouchy hat:
Round 1: [k4, p1, k1, p1] – repeat around. In this round, we will add 1 stitch. Use any method you are familiar with. I knitted one below from the 1st stitch.
Round 2: [k4, p1b, k1, p1b] – repeat around.
Round 3: [k4, p1, k1, p1] – repeat around.
Round 4: [k4, p1b, k1, p1b] – repeat around.
Round 5: [p5, k1, p1] – repeat around.
Round 6: [p4, p1b, k1, p1b] – repeat around.
Continue repeating Rounds 1-6 until the hat measures 21 cm in length. I repeated the pattern for a total of 6 repetitions.
Shaping the crown of chunky men’s slouchy hat:
Round 1: p5, k1, p2tog, [p4, k1, p2tog] – repeat around, p4, k1, remove the stitch marker and purl the last stitch and the first stitch together. Place the stitch marker back and start knitting Round 2.
Round 2: p4, k1, [p5, k1] – repeat around, p1.
Round 3: p4, k1, p2tog, [p3, k1, p2tog] – repeat around, p3, k1, remove the stitch marker and purl the last stitch and the first stitch together. Place the stitch marker back and start knitting Round 4.
Round 4: p3, k1, [p4, k1] – repeat around, p1.
Round 5: p3, k1, p2tog, [p2, k1, p2tog] – repeat around, p2, k1, remove the stitch marker and purl the last stitch and the first stitch together. Place the stitch marker back and start knitting Round 6.
Round 6: p2, k1, [p3, k1] – repeat around, p1.
Round 7: p2, k1, p2tog, [p1, k1, p2tog] – repeat around, p1, k1, remove the stitch marker and purl the last stitch and the first stitch together. Place the stitch marker back and start knitting Round 8.
Round 8: p1, k1, [p2, k1] – repeat around, p1.
Round 9: p1, k1, p2tog, [k1, p2tog] – repeat around, k1, remove the stitch marker and purl the last stitch and the first stitch together.
Break yarn and leave 10 cm tail. Thread the end through the remaining stitches and fasten securely. Weave in all ends securely.
