Knitting materials and tools:

Circular (16 in or longer) and double-pointed knitting needles 5 mm (US 8 / UK 6 ).

PaintBox, Simply Chunky (5) – 100% acrylic, 100 grams – 136 meters per skein. Quantity: 75 grams.

Knit docker hat size: 

Size: Adult/ Child – 53-58 cm (21-23”) 

Gauge: 13-14 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Common abbreviations of knit stitches:

k – knit

k2tog – knit two together

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

pm – place stitch marker

Cast on 72 sts (66 sts) or any number multiple of 6. Join to knit in the rounds. PM.

Round 1: knit all stitches around.

Repeat Round 1, working in stockinette stitch, until the hat measures 18–19 cm (7–7.5 in).

Shaping the crown of the docker hat:

Change to DPN when needed.

Divide all stitches in 6 parts. For the child size you will have 11 sts in each section, and for the adult size 12 sts in each section.

Round 1: [skpo, k10 (k9)] – repeat around. (66/60)

Round 2: knit all stitches around.

Round 3: [skpo, k9 (k8)] – repeat around. (60/54)

Round 4: knit all stitches around.

Round 5: [skpo, k8 (k7)] – repeat around. (54/48)

Round 6: knit all stitches around.

Round 7: [skpo, k7 (k6)] – repeat around. (48/42)

Round 8: knit all stitches around.

Round 9: [skpo, k6 (k5)] – repeat around. (42/36)

Round 10: knit all stitches around.

Shaping the loop on the docker’s hat crown:

Round 1: [ k1, skpo] – twice (4)

Start knitting an i-cord: Slip all 4 stitches to the right end of the needle. With the working yarn coming from the left side, k4. Slip the stitches back to the right end again and repeat. Work a total of 8-9 rows. At the ends, k2tog twice. Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Pull the yarn through the remaining two stitches and then sew the I-cord to the crown, forming a loop. Weave in all ends.
