Stylish Diana Knit Mittens Pattern
(Straight Needles)

I’m an always “cold feet-and-hands” person. I probably get my socks off only when taking the shower and have an extra blanket next to my bed just in case I get cold during the night. When the temperature outside drops closer to a zero degree Celsius I already have my hat, scarf and mittens ready. If you are like me then you will love this mittens pattern. It’s especially true for those, who can’t keep their hands in the pockets when walking outside (like me pushing the stroller with a twenty months old daughter). What I particularly like about these mittens is its cuff (wind doesn’t get through them easily), its softness and, of course, the color. Knitting materials and tools:

<> 5 Straight Needles (Double Pointed) 3.5 mm (US 4). You can also use Circular Knitting Needles;

<> Long mink wool – 75% wool, 25% nylon. Café au lait color: 50 grams – 350 m per skein – in total less than 1 ball;

Knit mittens size:

Wrist size 16-20 сm

Length – 28 cm

Gauge: 22 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Note for knitters:

Knit with two strands of yarn at once.

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p – purl

k2tog – knit two together

yoL – yarn over left: Lay the working yarn over the right needle from back to front. In the next round knit it in a way to avoid hole.

yoR – yarn over right: Bring the yarn between needles and lay it over to right needle from front to back. In the next round knit it in a way to avoid hole.

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

Knitting main part of the right mitten

Cast on 36 stitches and redistribute them between needles. I was using Bulgarian cast on method. It is also sometimes called the Estonian cast on and a Latin cast on. It has a nice decorative edge that is resilient and springy, and it is made using a long tail. Check the video below for better understanding. You can also use simple long tail cast on technique.

 

Rounds 1-20: knit in stockinette stitch (or knit until piece reaches 7-8 cm)

Round 21: k3, yoR, k33

Round 22: knit all stitches around (37 stitches)

Round 23: k3, yoR, k34

Round 24: knit all stitches around (38 stitches)

Round 25: k3, yoR, k35

Round 26: knit all stitches around (39 stitches)

Round 27: k3, yoR, k36

Round 28: knit all stitches around (40 stitches)

Round 29: k3, yoR, k37

Round 30: knit all stitches around (41 stitches)

Round 31: k3, yoR, k38

Round 32: knit all stitches around (42 stitches)

Round 33: k3, yoR, k39

Round 34: knit all stitches around (43 stitches)

Round 35: k3, yoR, k40

Round 36: knit all stitches around (44 stitches)

Round 37: k3, yoR, k41

Round 38: knit all stitches around (45 stitches)

Round 39: k3, yoR, k42

Round 40: knit all stitches around (46 stitches)

Round 41: k3, yoR, k43

Round 42: knit all stitches around (47 stitches)

Round 43: k3, yoR, k44

Round 44: knit all stitches around (48 stitches)

Round 45: k3, yoR, k45

Round 46: knit all stitches around (49 stitches)

Round 47: k3, yoR, k46

Round 48: knit all stitches around (50 stitches)

Round 49: k3, place next 12 stitches on scrap yarn, k35

Round 50: knit all stitches around (38 stitches)

Repeat Round 50 until the mitten reaches the tip of your little finger.  In my case it was 7-7.5 cm.

Shaping the top of right mitten:

Round 1: [k1, k2tog, k13, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 2: knit all stitches around

Round 3: [k1, k2tog, k11, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 4: knit all stitches around

Round 5: [k1, k2tog, k9, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 6: [k1, k2tog, k7, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 7: [k1, k2tog, k5, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 8: [k1, k2tog, k3, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Round 13: [k1, k2tog, k1, skpo, k1] – repeat twice

Cut the yarn leaving 10 cm tail, thread through remaining 10 stitches, pull tight and secure on the inside.

Fasten off to continue to thumb.

Knitting gusset section of the right mitten:

Pick up 12 stitches from the scrap yarn. Pick up four stitches around the gap by knitting into them.  Knit every round until thumb measures about 4 cm (1.5”) or until it reaches the tip of your thumb.

Start decreasing rounds.

Round 1: [k2tog] – 8 times

Round 2: [k2tog] – 4 times

Round 3: [k2tog] – 2 times

Round 4: [k2tog] – 1 time

If there is a gap in the thumb gusset, use the tail to sew it up.

Knitting main part of the left mitten:

Repeat all steps till the 21 Round.

Round 21: k14, yoL, k3, k19

Round 22: knit all stitches around (37 stitches)

Round 23: k15, yoL, k3, k19

Round 24: knit all stitches around (38 stitches)

Round 25: k16, yoL, k3, k19

Round 26: knit all stitches around (39 stitches)

Round 27: k17, yoL, k3, k19

Round 28: knit all stitches around (40 stitches)

Round 29: k18, yoL, k3, k19

Round 30: knit all stitches around (41 stitches)

Round 31: k19, yoL, k3, k19

Round 32: knit all stitches around (42 stitches)

Round 33: k20, yoL, k3, k19

Round 34: knit all stitches around (43 stitches)

Round 35: k21, yoL, k3, k19

Round 36: knit all stitches around (44 stitches)

Round 37: k22, yoL, k3, k19

Round 38: knit all stitches around (45 stitches)

Round 39: k23, yoL, k3, k19

Round 40: knit all stitches around (46 stitches)

Round 41: k24, yoL, k3, k19

Round 42: knit all stitches around (47 stitches)

Round 43: k25, yoL, k3, k19

Round 44: knit all stitches around (48 stitches)

Round 45: k26, yoL, k3, k19

Round 46: knit all stitches around (49 stitches)

Round 47: k27, yoL, k3, k19

Round 48: knit all stitches around (50 stitches)

Round 49: k16, place next 12 stitches on scrap yarn, k3, k19

All other rounds and gusset section will be done in the same way as for the right mitten.
