Barbie-style bandana cowl knitting pattern:

Cast on 86 stitches plus 1 extra stitch if you are going to use the invisible joining method.  Place marker and join in round. Rib k1, p1 until the neck part reaches 13-14 cm (5.5 in) or 17-18 for the folded neck.

Regardless of the cowl size you are knitting, the increases should be performed in the same manner.

Count 7 sts from the beginning and place a stitch marker.

Round 1: M1R, k1, p1, M1R, k1, p1, k1, M1L, p1, k1, M1L, p1, [k1, p1] – till the end of round.

There are 31 stitches between the stitch marker indicating the beginning of the round and the one we placed earlier. Slip them to the waste yarn or stitch holder.

Now, switch to a larger needle size. From this point onward, we will be knitting in rows. To create the bandana cowl, begin making decreases until you reach 5 central stitches. To facilitate this process, I recommend marking these 5 stitches with stitch markers.

86 sts -7 sts (stitches we marked before increases) – 5 sts = 74 sts

74/2=37 sts

Count 37 stitches from the point where you finished Round 10, place a stitch marker (pm), skip the next 5 stitches, and place another stitch marker (pm).

Row 1: p1, k36, pm, k5, pm, k36, p1. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): p2tog, purl all other stitches, p2tog. Do not remove stitch markers. Turn.

Row 3: slip 1st stitch knitwise, knit all stitches till the end. Turn.

Row 4: p2tog, purl all other stitches, p2tog.

Continue repeating Rounds 3-4 until you have 5 central stitches between the stitch markers.

Switch back to the smaller size circular knitting needles, but ensure they are already 24 inches in length. Knit in rounds.

Next Round: slip 1st stitch knitwise, [M1R, k1] – repeat 4 times, pick up 74 stitches along one side and knit them right away (purl 74th stitch instead of knitting it), [k7, p1] – repeat 3 times, k7. Pick up the next stitch and purl it. Afterward, pick up 73 stitches along the other side and knit them right away. (188 sts)

Next Round: [p1, k1] – repeat around.

Repeat the last round four more times.

Bind off all stitches.

On the wrong side weave in ends.
