Knitting materials and knitting tools:
<> Circular knitting needles, 7 mm (UK 2)
<> Caron Simply Soft (4) –100% acrylic. Knit with two strands of yarn. You can also use bulky yarn.
Chunky knitting cardigan size:
Chest: 68 cm
Sleeve length: 30 cm
Length: 38 cm
Gauge: 12-13 stitches in = 4 inches
Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two together
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over: lay the working yarn over the right needle from front to back.
pm – place marker
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Knit child cardigan instructions:
Knitting the right front piece of child cardigan:
Using 7 mm needles and long tail cast on method, cast on 22 stitches.
Row 1-7: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 8: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 9: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Rows 10-25: repeat Rows 8 and 9. At this point the piece measures 15 cm.
Row 26: sel s, k2tog, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 27: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 28: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 29: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Rows 30-57: repeat Rows 26-29. (14 stitches)
Row 58: sel s, k2tog, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 59: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 60: sel s, k2tog, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 61: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 62: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (12 stitches)
Turn and bind off all sts on the wrong side. Cut the yarn leaving long tail – 50-60 cm.
Knitting the left front piece of child cardigan:
Repeat everything till the Row 25.
Row 26: sel s, k18, k2tog, sel s.
Row 27: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 28: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 29: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Go on repeating Rows 26-29 until you have 14 sts on your needles.
Row 58: sel s, k10, k2tog, sel s.
Row 59: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 60: sel s, k9, k2tog, sel s.
Row 61: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 62: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. (12 stitches)
Turn and bind off all sts on the wrong side. Cut the yarn leaving long tail – 50-60 cm.
Knitting the back piece of child cardigan:
Using 7 mm needles and long tail cast on method, cast on 42 stitches.
Row 1-7: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 8: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 9: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Rows 10-62: repeat Rows 8 and 9. Bind off all stitches on the wrong side. Cut the yarn and leave again a long tail.
Right side facing and using yarn needles sew together shoulders. Check the video starting from 29 min.
Knitting the collar of child cardigan:
Pick up stitches along right front piece, neckline, and back down left front piece.
Rows 1-2: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the point when you have 21 sts, [k2tog, yo, knit next 5 sts in ribbing] – repeat 3 times.
Rows 4-8: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Bind off all stitches.
Knitting the sleeves of child cardigan:
Count 42 rows from the bottom and place stitch markers on the back part as well as on the right and left front pieces. Pick up 40 stitches between 2 stitch markers for the sleeve.
Row 1: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 till sleeve reaches 24-27 cm.
Next Row: sel s, [k2tog, p1] – repeat till the end, k2tog, sel s.
Next Row: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s.
Repeat last row until ribbing reaches 5 cm. Bind off all stitches and cut the yarn leaving a long tail.
Right side facing you, close the side seam of the sleeves till the armhole. After that sew together the side seams.
Sew buttons. Weave in all ends. Wash and dry flat.
The last touch is to decorate cardigan with crochet flowers for the girl or crochet cars for the boy.
