Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
p – purl
st(s) – stitch(es)
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Diamond knit stitch instructions:
Cast on a multiple of 4 sts, plus 2 selvage stitches.
Row 0: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s. I call this Row zero because we are not going to repeat it after.
Row 1: sel s, *bring the working yarn in front and slip the next 3 stitches to the right-hand needle (do not pull the working yarn), k1 – repeat from *, sel s.
Row 2: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
Row 4: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, *k1, insert the needle underneath two bars that were formed in Rows 1 and 3, knit the next stitch and pull the yarn back underneath bars, k2 – repeat from *, sel s.
Row 6: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 7: sel s, k2, *bring the working yarn in front and slip the next 3 stitches to the right-hand needle (do not pull the working yarn), k1 – repeat from * until you have 3 stitches, bring the working yarn in front and slip the next 2 stitches to the right-hand needle, sel s.
Row 8: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 9: repeat Row 7.
Row 10: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 11: sel s, k2, *k1, insert the needle underneath two bars that were formed in Rows 1 and 3, knit the next stitch and pull the yarn back underneath bars, k2 – repeat from * until you have 3 stitches, k1, insert the needle underneath two bars that were formed in Rows 7 and 9, knit the next stitch and pull the yarn back underneath bars, sel s.
Row 12: sel, s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Repeat Rows 1-12 to form a pattern.
