Knitting materials and tools:

Straight or Circular Knitting Needles 3.5 mm (US 4)

Caron, Simply Soft (4) – 100% Acrylic. 2 colors: Color A – green, Color B – beige.

Weight Category – Medium.

Yarn or tapestry needle, stitch markers.

Size of flat knit socks:

Size: US7-7.5 / EU 37-38 or 24.5 cm

Gauge: 17-18 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Sole length calculation: 24.5 cm -15% = 21 cm. We’re reducing the length of the sole by 15% since the chosen stitch pattern for the sock is already sufficiently stretchy.

Flat knit two-color socks knitting pattern:

MAKE TWO.

Using Color A cast on 40 sts or any other number multiple of 4.

Rows 1-9: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s. Or knit until ribbing reaches 3-3.5 cm. Work an odd number of rows.

Switch to Color B:

When changing yarn colors, always begin by slipping the first stitch. Then, starting from the second stitch, switch to the new yarn color.

Row 10: sel s, [k3, slip next stitch holding working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k2, sel s.

Row 11: sel s, k2, [slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, k3] – repeat till the end, sel s.

A helpful hint for all even rows (wrong side): If you prefer not to follow the pattern, knit all stitches that match the color of your current working yarn. Slip all stitches, holding the working yarn in front, that are a different color from the main one.

Switch to Color A:

Row 12: sel s, k2, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k3, sel s.

Row 13: sel s, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, k2, sel s.

Switch to Color B:

Row 14: sel s, k1, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, sel s.

Row 15: sel s, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Switch to Color A:

Row 16: sel s, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s.

Row 17: sel s, k1, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, sel s.

Repeat Rows 10-17 until the sock measures 13 cm. I knitted Rows 10-17 five times in total and then knitted Rows 10-13 again.

Follow the next steps for calculating the heel:

40 sts /2 = 20 sts.

20 sts/2 = 10 sts.

Place stitch markers in the following order along the row: 10 sts (heel), pm, 20 sts (central part), pm, 10 sts (heel).

Switch to color B (in my case) and cut color A.

Row 54: sel s, k9, [slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back, k3]- repeat 5 times, k9, sel s. Turn.

Knitting the heel (side 1):

Rows (WS) 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15: slip 1st knitwise, k8, p1. Turn.

Rows (RS) 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16: sel s, k8, sel s. Turn.

Bind off all stitches. Once you have the last stitch on your needle, pick up 9 stitches along the inner edge through the back loops. Pick up only the 1st stitch through both loops. Continue knitting central part: [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front]- repeat 5 times, k9, sel s.  Turn.

Rows (WS) 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16: sel s, k8, sel s. Turn.

Bind off all stitches. Once you have the last stitch on your needle, pick up 9 stitches along the inner edge through the front loops. Pick up only the 1st stitch through both loops. Turn your work. Make a yarn over to get rid of the hole later. K9, sel s.

Join Color A.

Row 56: sel s, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in back] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s. (40 sts)

Row 57: sel s, k1, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front, [k3, slip next stitch holding the working yarn in front] – repeat till the end, sel s.

Switch to Color B.

Repeat Rows 10-17 until the sock measures 26 cm from the edge. I knitted Rows 10-17 six times and then knitted Rows 10-15 once more. Knit additional rows if needed. Cut color B.  The foot length of the sock must be about 18.5-19 cm.

Row 7: sel s, k3, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k8, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k3, sel s.

Row 8: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s (24 sts)

Row 9: sel s, k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k6, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k2, sel s.

Row 10: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s (20 sts)

Row 11: sel s, k1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k4, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1, sel s.

Row 12: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s (16 sts)

Cut the yarn, leaving 50-60 cm length. Thread the tail through the remaining 16 stitches. Sew the sock along the edge by inserting the needle from right to left through the bumps on the right and left sides, which were created by knitting the last selvage stitch. When you reach the heel part, insert the needle into the center of the selvage stitch and pull it out through the next one. Repeat the same step on the other side.

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
