Frog hat knitting pattern:

Knitting frog hat’s body:

Using smaller size knitting needles, cast on 97 sts or any other number multiple of 6 plus 1 extra stitch.

Row 1: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, sel s. Turn

Row 2: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat till the end, p1, sel s. Turn.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the ribbing measures 5 cm.

Switch to larger knitting needles or continue working with the same size.

The main part of the hat is knitted in garter stitch.

Next Row: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s. Repeat this row until the main part (after the ribbing) measures 9-10 cm.

Shaping frog hat’s crown:

The next step is to join the knitting in the round. To do this, slip the last stitch from the right-hand needle to the left-hand needle and then knit the first and last stitches together (k2tog). You should now have 96 stitches on the needles. Place a stitch marker before the knitted stitch to mark the beginning of the round.

Divide the 96 stitches by 6, which gives you 16 stitches per section. Place a stitch marker every 16 stitches to divide the round into 6 sections.

Round 1: [k14, k2tog] – repeat 6 times. (90 sts)

Round 2: purl all stitches around.

Round 3: [ k2tog, k13] – repeat 6 times. (84 sts)

Round 4: purl all stitches around.

Round 5: [k12, k2tog] – repeat 6 times. (78 sts)

Round 6: purl all stitches around.

Round 7: [ k2tog, k11] – repeat 6 times. (72 sts)

Round 8: purl all stitches around.

Round 9: [k10, k2tog] – repeat 6 times. (66 sts)

Round 10: purl all stitches around.

Round 11: [ k2tog, k9] – repeat 6 times. (60 sts)

Round 12: purl all stitches around.

Continue shaping the crown by alternating rows with decreases at the beginning of each section and rows with decreases at the end of each section until you have 18 stitches remaining.

Trim the yarn, leaving a 10-15 cm tail. Using a crochet hook or tapestry needle, thread the yarn tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the opening. Finish by weaving in the ends.

Knitting the ties (make 2):

Using 3.5 mm DPNs, knit an I-cord: Cast on 3 stitches. *Knit all stitches, then slide the stitches to the other end of the needle without turning the work. Repeat from * until the I-cord measures 66 cm (26 in) in length. Bind off and weave in the ends.

Fold the tie in half. Pull the top loop through the bottom corner of the hat, then thread the ends of the tie through this loop and pull tight to create a knot.

Knitting frog’s eyes (make 2):

Round 1: Using a 3.5 mm crochet hook and black yarn, start with a magic ring. Work 8 SC into the ring, then join with sl st to the first SC. (8 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 SC into the same stitch as join, 2 SC in each stitch around.  To join, insert the hook into the 1st SC, draw up a loop, yarn over with new (white) color and pull through both loops to complete the stitch. Cut the black yarn. (16 sts).

Round 3: ch 1, SC into the same stitch as join, 2 SC in next st, [SC in next st, 2 SC in next st] – repeat around. Join with sl st to  1st SC. (24 sts)

Round 4: ch 1: SC into the same stitch as join, SC in next st, 2 SC in next st, [SC in next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st] – repeat around (32 sts). Change the yarn color to green as described previously. Cut the white yarn.

Rounds 5-9: ch 1, SC in each st around. Join with sl st to  1st SC. (32sts)

Round 10: ch 1, [SC in next 2 sts, SC2tog] – repeat around. Join with sl st to  1st SC.(24 sts)

Round 11: ch 1, [SC in next st, SC2tog] – repeat around. Join with sl st to  1st SC. (16 sts)

Round 12: ch 1, [SC2tog]  – repeat around. Join with sl st to  1st SC. (8 sts)

Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm tail. Stuff the eye with fiber until it looks the way you like. Using a yarn needle, thread the tail, pick up the front loops of the remaining 8 stitches, and pull tight to close the back of the eye. Do not cut the yarn; use it to sew the eye to your hat. Find the perfect spot for the eyes by standing in front of a mirror and pinning them in place until you’re satisfied with the position.
