Knitting materials and tools:

Circular or double-pointed knitting needles 4 mm (US 6/UK 8) for the ribbing, 5 mm (US 8/UK 6) for the main part.

Lanoso, Masal Bebe (4) –100% acrylic, 100 grams -180 m per skein.

Five stitch markers, yarn needle, crochet hook 4 mm

 

Newborn baby knit cap size: 

Head circumference: Baby: 38-41 cm (15-16”)

Gauge: 17-18 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

 

Common abbreviations of knitting stitches:

k – knit

p3tog – purl three together

k2tog – knit two together

k3tog – knit three together: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit next two stitches together, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch.

p – purl

WS – wrong side

RS – right side

sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch.

skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.

pm – place marker

Newborn baby knit cap pattern:

Using bigger size knitting needles (5 mm) and long tail method, cast on 56 stitches. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker.

Take a 4 mm knitting needle and knit ribbing k1, p1 for 8 rounds or until ribbing reaches 3.5-4 cm.

Knitting body of the baby cap:

Change to 5 mm needles.

Round 1: knit all stitches around.

Round 2: purl all stitches around.

Repeat Rounds 1-2 until hat reaches 9.5-10 cm. I knitted 20 rounds after the ribbing.

Shaping the crown of baby cap:

Place stitch markers in the next order: count – 4 sts, pm, 20 sts, pm, 8 sts, pm, 20 sts pm, 4 sts.

Round 1: k4, skpo, k16, skpo, k8, skpo, k16, skpo, k4.

Round 2: purl all stitches around.

Round 3: k4, skpo, k14, skpo, k8, skpo, k14, skpo, k4.

Round 4: purl all stitches around.

Round 5: k4, skpo, k12, skpo, k8, skpo, k12, skpo, k4.

Round 6: purl all stitches around.

Round 7: k4, skpo, k10, skpo, k8, skpo, k10, skpo, k4.

Round 8: purl all stitches around.

Round 9: k4, skpo, k8, skpo, k8, skpo, k8, skpo, k4.

Round 10: purl all stitches around.

Round 11: k4, skpo, k6, skpo, k8, skpo, k6, skpo, k4.

Round 12: purl all stitches around.

Round 13: k4, skpo, k4, skpo, k8, skpo, k4, skpo, k4.

Round 14: purl all stitches around.

Round 15: k4, skpo, k2, skpo, k8, skpo, k2, skpo, k4.

Round 16: purl all stitches around.

Round 17: k4, skpo, skpo, k8, skpo, skpo, k4.

Round 18: purl all stitches around.

Round 19: k3, skpo, skpo, k6, skpo, skpo, k3.

Round 20: purl all stitches around.

Cut the yarn leaving 20-25 cm tail. Using yarn needle graft the crown. Weave in ends.

Knitting ear flaps for the baby cap:

Find your very first stitch and count 7 sts to the right side and 7 sts to the left side. Place stitch markers that will indicate the beginning of the right and left earflap. Hold your hat upside down. For the right earflap, pick up 13 sts along the edge starting in the stitch with the first stitch marker. For the left earflap, count 13 stitches from the second stitch marker to the right and pick up 13 stitches.

Row 1 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn – 13 sts

Row 2 (RS): sel s, skpo, k7, skpo, sel s. Turn – 11 sts

Row 3 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn – 11 sts

Row 4 (RS): sel s, skpo, k5, skpo, sel s. Turn – 9 sts

Row 5 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn – 9 sts

Row 6 (RS): sel s, skpo, k3, skpo, sel s. Turn – 7 sts

Row 7 (WS): sel s, purl all stitches, sel s. Turn – 7 sts

Row 8 (RS): sel s, skpo, k1, skpo, sel s. Turn – 5 sts

Row 9 (WS): sel s, p3tog, sel s. Turn – 3 sts

Row 10 (RS): k3tog 

Knitting ties of the baby cap:

Take a crochet hook, chain 40. On the way back, starting from the 2nd chain from hook make a slip stitch in each chain. If you do not have hook, you can always knit an i-cord. Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Repeat for the second earflap. Add first or yarn pom pom.
